Canon ipf8000 in the UK ? Silly prices ?

Am I in a parallel universe again ? I started looking around for prices on the ipf8000 (which is probably impractically too large for me) while still hoping that the rumoured ipf6500 turns up.

Now, most of us are used to be ripped off in the UK (and the EU), but even given the current $US rate at about 1.97 to the pound my jaw dropped when I saw the few advertised prices. In the US the recommended price is $US5,995 - so everyone is going to be cheaper in real life. In the UK the prices ranges from £5,500 to £7,995 plus VAT.

This must be the most offensive price differential I have seen to date. Anyone know better ?

This is what I found Peter:

Canon imagePROGRAF iPF8000 Wide Format
- While Supplies Last
- Includes Free Eye-One Display LT
- a $160 value
- FREE S&H
- Final Price $3,396.03 after $1,500 Canon Trade-Up Rebate
Reg. Price $5,995.95
DGR Price with rebates and discounts, Final Cost with Free Calibrator is $3,396.03.

Now I don't know what the qualifying printers are. However, one keeps the old printer!!!!

So this is very strange.

Perhaps the European model has to pass certain Common Market standards for disposal of parts that or ecosystem friendly and so have greater expenses.

Or perhaps, Canon in the U.K. is a separate independant marketing company that makes up its own prices.

Is it possibly a printing error and that the prices are in US dollars and not Euros?

At this rate, it would be worthwhile perhaps to have one shipped from the USA!

We had this issue with Mamiya in the USA being so much more expensive here that people bought them from Roberts in the UK.

Peter's post was unsual in that the differential was so great but fairly standard in the issue of the massive general rip-off. What are you trying to say please?

I am thinking that the EU has major differences is standards for use of components that damage the environment and perhaps Canon Inc. has to use special materials to comply with the extra requirements in Europe.

Or else perhaps this is a mistake!

It's hard to grasp the price differential otherwise unless of course they are simply greedy.

If there are no differences in the machines then people in the U.k. should haver the printers shipped from B&H and save the difference!

Is there any reason why this can'rt ber a solution?

Of course Canon are greedy. There are few companies in UK that supply this gear, so no competition. Most uk companies advertising on the net say 'phone for prices'. The demand is low, its a big lump to get shipped from abroad, plus import duties and vat, etc. Canon UK is a separate company, I very much doubt they will carry out warranty work if it is bought outside of UK - the same as for canon cameras.

Best wishes,

Ray

Good [choose your deity here]! Even worse (for us). I also binned 2 S9000s at Christmas as the print heads were very dead and I wasn't going to risk a new print head when at least one of the bodies were somehow otherwise broken also.

Perhaps the European model has to pass certain Common Market standards for disposal of parts that or ecosystem friendly and so have greater expenses.

Perhaps, but the RoHS/WEEE (whatever) regs are going to be used by EU suppliers in the same way as the introduction of the Euro a few years back to increases prices unnecessarily. The rules have been coming for some time and most well made electronics are already ready for this in a global market.

Or perhaps, Canon in the U.K. is a separate independant marketing company that makes up its own prices.

I cannot find any official recommended price. Canon no longer publish these for large items it seems. This allows their resellers to gouge consumers (business or home) as much as they like.

Is it possibly a printing error and that the prices are in US dollars and not Euros?

Unlikely; I checked multiple UK sites and the few that published a price all varied and all mentioned U.K. VAT - so the price is going to be GBP.

At this rate, it would be worthwhile perhaps to have one shipped from the USA!

Looks like it, but like I said the 8000 is too big for me - I was just expressing my shock at the gouging going on.

Sounds like someone could make a killing moving printers to the U.K.

Hmmm???

Now does Canon honor its warranties world wide??

Asher

Hell with warranties. Buy two, still save money and have the spare in the garage.

A 300% - 400% markup is just obscene.

Perhaps I need to look at Epson's pricing policies a bit more closely.

I`m no expert on product standards in either the E U or the U S A , but I suspect that the regs covering these sorts of things are about the same in both countries , especially a state like California . So don`t let rip-off companies like Canon and Adobe off the hook by trying to explain their warped marketing strategies as being down to some mistake .
And thats a big Hello from the U K .

Not that I've not got anything else to do, but B&H do not list the ipf8000, or I couldn't find it, so looking at another big lump - the hpz3100 at B&H

hp z3100 $6295
shipping $1274.40 to uk - ten days maybe
duty = 0% - its the best guess I can make, based on hm gov hopeless sites and elsewhere
vat = 17.5%

$8894 === £4700.00 more or less

In the UK from Misco, its £3540.10 retail, plus £3.50 delivery (none in stock - 5day stock)

It seems that HP are a far more honourable company than Canon.

Talking about honourable companies, I bought last July a cheap Packard-Bell gps unit. I screwed it up, updating the firmware last November. Packard Bell sent me a pre paid, insured envelope and packaging material. I posted it on the Monday, and I got it back on the Wednesday, new mother board, updated firmware and maps - beat that canon ....

Best wishes,

Ray

Great Britain though in EU maybe pay for its refuse to adopt Euro and keep their Pound...

I've done a quick Google search and found this....5368.25 € VAT INCLUDED which is approx 3500 US$ VAT Excluded

I don't know this store so can't tell about them, they can be reached by phone, but they're not brick and mortar... I'm sure they would ship to UK.

Hope this helps my British friends!

EDIT sorry, for the bad calculation, in US$ VAT excluded the right conversion is 5800 $ not 3500. Too bad! but still a good price!

Hi Nicolas,

Pixmania are OK. I know a number of folk who buy from them. They have a physical presence - you can pick up from London, or other places in Europe. However the uk site does not have the canon printer listed, but I reckon a phone call would confirm they could supply it.

According to xe.com, 5,368.25 EUR = 6,938.77 USD, but that may be different tomorrow.

It seems that it has been decided by canon that no-body in the UK wants this canon printer, it certainly seems tricky to find it at a reasonable price.

Best wishes,

Ray

I too use xe.com. 6,938.77 USD minus 19.60% (VAT) =5,801 USD

I know Pixmania, but you've been fooled by the advert, the store is Vepenet!

I don't understand why Brits couldn't buy from the continent…

Hi Nicolas,

We can buy wherever we like, like anyone else. But it may become an issue with delivery costs, slightly different vat rates, warranty work, instruction manuals, power leads, and other stuff. This is not a small item, that could be sent in a shoe box, via normal post. - it would probably be about $1500 delivery from B&H, if they had it, for example.

Confusing page - I was certain I had found the printer on pixmania.com, but not in pixmania.co.uk. Not much of a site design, when the link has more impact than the main page.... or maybe I should learn French ;-)

Ah, well,

Best wishes,

Ray

I received my Epson A3+ Laser printer thru courrier (I guess it was UPS) 3 years ago. Heavy machine! not that expensive price for delivery. Thee chanel is not that wide!
Another way is to have it delevered in one of big EU cities and spend a nice week-end there while taking delivery... you may even bring your wife!
More seriously, if one really need that printer, and if the price is really to high in UK, then solution has to be found...

PS I've been fooled too by that page, just discovered that as I wanted to check before posting!

Have a nice new week
