Cat portraits

Hi,

Here are a couple of portraits of our cat, which I took in natural light. He is extremely camera shy and averts his eyes and turns his head, but I got finally lucky in my millionth attempt to photograph him.

Thanks John and Rachel.

@John: I have been trying for 6 years now, so I was bound to get some results eventually ;-)

I agree with John, I like the pose in no.1 best, although the stare in no.2 is piercing. The blue eyes are magnets for the viewer, and the shallow DOF make sure we also stay focused.

Cheers,
Bart

Thanks Bart, much appreciated. I was trying to achieve a shallow DOF much like in the squirrel picture. The focusing was done manually through the viewfinder, thanks to the EG-S super-precision focusing screen. I am very glad to have installed that focusing screen following your recommendation. And the 100mm 2.8 macro lens with its excellent bokeh did the rest.

Hi Cem

My preference is for No 1, Boogie has the most beautiful eyes, I know how difficult it is with pets, our old dog Kim was camera shy too and would turn away from the lens, so well done for your perseverance these are lovely. I agree about the 100mm 2.8 - it's one of my favourite lenses too!

Cem - lovely shot of Boogie.

If it weren't for a flower shoot for the Flowers by the Wayside thread and my 100 2.8 macro I'd have missed my favorite image of Gizmo since he too runs from the lens.

One of my images of Daisy at the studio is with the 50 1.2 and only her nose is focused. I have people come in and ask for that for kids shots.

Thanks a lot Charlotte, Paul and Kathy. I think we all are unanimous that the 1st one is a better portrait, although I suspect that the second one would receive a warmer welcome had I shown that one individually w/o the first picture. ;-)

@Kathy: did you show that image of Daisy here before? Now I'm curious :)

Cem, a lovely portrait. Those eyes..those eyes!

You have controlled the exposure well and my thanks to the feline for staying put.

Thanks for sharing a beautiful member of the family with us.

Boogie Wonderland

Cem,

I'd never have predicted I'd be admiring picture of a cat! I used to deride "cat pictures" taken by people who collect lens and use the cat's whiskers as their test chart! Well here we are all enjoying an entirely novel cat picture which seems to me to be a true portrait of just one cat, one unique cat in the entire world. There's unusual asymmetry in the lighting and the eye color and iris color and micro detail is nothing less than starling!

I must commend you on this splendid picture and that you did not take Boogle Wonderland's "No!" as the final word!

Thanks Asher! Boogie Wonderland is called simply Boogie in daily life. He is a Ragdoll with a certified family tree, hence the full name he is entitled to ;-).
