Cold Bison

It was -17°F/-27°C when I took this shot of a bison shuffling along in the Lamar Valley of Yellowstone with frost in its fur. Pentax K20D + DA* 50-135mm f/2.8 @ 50mm.

Steve, this is a monumental image with looming tragedy. I like it but feel bad for the bison. I also realize, however, that this cold is part of the reason that this particular bison has survived to this day.

I can't help thinking of Toyota! If it cannot adapt, nature does not favor imperfections long term.

Thanks Asher. Actually there isn't much danger to this bison. They've lived here a long time in much colder weather. This has been a mild winter so far and spring is right around the corner. A wolf pack can take down a bison but it's usually in a situation where its been cornered. I enjoy winter in Yellowstone with the relative isolation compared to other times of the year.

Hi Steve,

It seems that you were pretty close to this bison! Are they used to people being in their neighborhood? Anyway, great shot!

Cheers,

Striking image Steve!
There's a gentle majesty within these creatures, a stoic perseverance if you will.
Hunted to near extinction, they've made a comeback as best they can.

Thanks Cem and John. Cem, the bison was between 10 and 15 feet away but I was safely within my blind at the time of the capture although bison have been known to turn and gore an unwary visitor.
