Convert to web question (PS)

I'm only a week into converting images for web display. Using PS CS3, file>convert to web. I'm noticing I'm losing an awfully lot of saturation. Default workspace is Adobe RGB, yet this just happened working with an image posted online in S-RGB. It's also happened with my orig's from Adobe RGB.

Just when you think you understand something about colour management.........?

Help?
Thanks,
-Greg

Hi Greg,

Normally, converting from Adobe RGB to sRGB should not cause significant loss of saturation, although your results will vary to some extent depending on the rendering intent chosen.

Did you try converting the image right from PS itself (using convert profile menu option) just to see if it gets desaturated on the screen immediately?

I am also puzzeled by this statement of yours: "It's also happened with my orig's from Adobe RGB.". What do you mean by that? That the original file has been likewise desaturated after "saving to web"?? How can that be? Did you overwrite the original A-RGB file by accident by saving the sRGB version on top of it?

Cheers,

Hi Greg,

It may help to read this article. It's not very well written, but could explain your problem.

In particular it says "Edit> Convert To Profile: sRGB IEC61966-2.1 BEFORE Saving for the Web".

Is it possible for you to post a problem image, or provide a link to one?

Regards,

Stuart

Finally in CS3 Save for Web is a check box "Convert to sRGB" and of course, it should be on. Its found in the fly out menu in the upper right of the UI.
