Jaime Johnson: Dall Sheep

Jaime,

This is such a handsome animal. I have to see more! One of your best images yet, with an attractive context in the foreground and soft OOF distant background. The diagonal of the rock completes this very well. Great job. So often a long lens isolates but then there's no world for the animal. Here the balance is perfect. Audubon could not have done better.

Not being familiar with Dall sheep my first glance made out Dali sheep. And I thought this was cheeky naming a sheep, (that has survived millions of years of being hunted), Dali, after a man with a curly moustache. However, the name comes from William Healey Dall, the American naturalist, (1845–1927).

What's amazing to me about Dall sheep is that, except for the November-December mating season, the males and females are found in separate bands! So I guess now he has some idea of what he's supposed to be doing!

A great picture of a beautiful animal. The light really adds to the picture. I'm guessing the soft glow on his horn is from the setting sun.
