Do you have the time, traveler?, she asked.
For you, all the time in the world; I said, sitting down besides her.

Hear then, my story. She began...

It's so common for folk to say, "How are you?" and then not listen if the poor fellow has some sad story to share! To stop to give attention to another person is an act of kindness, respect and generosity. We all like to be appreciated! Mostly, life moves too fast.

Asher, people have got busy. Time is in short supply. Work, family, the daily struggles and traffic jams etc. indeed bear you out..life moves too fast!

However, the environment and social culture/customs also play their part. Though, to a much lesser degree than in the days past.

Regards.

Engaging people BEFORE taking that travel picture!

Fahim and Ayesha,

Most of us just take pictures quickly as we pass. You give us a good lesson in slowing down and actually engaging. Think of all the people you have affected in all your travels each time you stopped and engaged them! On each occasion, that meeting created memory for you both and the people you listened to. Then they told their family and friends about the visitors whole actually listened. This knowledge and opinion then spreads with each of your descriptions to those who you relate to!

Very gradually, breaking barriers of fear and ignorance, this contact lowers the barriers between people. The greetings and time spent work together as measures as each other's human worth. This then is added to our various cultures' collective memories. The next time someone "like you" will be seen, without realizing it, they will already know a little of what to expect, that attitude you showed. That's what the good traveler does!
