EOS 9D and 50D rumor

Never say never, but these 5D-II specs are extremely unlikely. The 1Ds Mark III uses two Digic III processors to handle 5 fps @ 21 Mpixel = 105 Mpixel per second. The 1D Mark III is roughly the same, because it also uses two Digic III processors to handle 10 fps @ 10 Mpixel = 100 Mpixel per second.

And now, suddenly, the successor of the 5D will be able to handle up to 8 fps @ 16.7 Mpixel = 133 Mpixel per second with only one Digic III processor?... Yeah, right!

Hi Johan,

I agree that for a single Digic III that would seem like a stretch to say the least. On the other hand, the cost of dual Digics is not that prohibitive. However, because the different camera models aren't exacly priced on a cost based model, it seems unlikely that Canon will jeopardize its model 1 series positioning either.

On the other hand, both cameras are rumored to have ISO 3200 native, which could mean that they have been improved over the previous models, and 1 Digic or 2, the read noise should be very low, and low in line noise as the trend seems to be. Both cameras could be tempting me soon. 9D for night shooting and scenery; 50D for the birds. Pattern (line) noise in my 30D is problematic in green-filtered light, where birds tend to be.

The point here is that if one specification of the rumoured models is clearly unrealistic, why assume that any of the specifications is more than just wishful thinking by the person who started the rumour?

That's right, John. Canon has a very long history of being absolutely water-tight until they're ready to leak. When, or if, they do "leak" it's always been obvious that they've authorized official unofficial information releases.

For example, this weekend's official discontinuance of their Powershot G9 (according to the B&H site) represents a pretty unmistakable early signal that they plan to introduce a successor at Photokina.

Hi, Johan,

Suppose none of the cited specifications seems manifestly unrealistic. Would this add credibility to the whole suite?

Wishful thinking does not always announce itself by including seemingly-unattainable predictions.

Many factors can cause each of us to, for each specification, come to some conclusion as to how likely it is to become true.

It always cracks me up to see predictions about what manufacturers will produce. Why? Because there's no point in buying it until the price has dropped from the high introductory price to the more reasonable price about 9 months down the line.

I need another body. The rumors say nothing to me. I hate to buy another 5d when I know there is a new model coming very very soon. Why waste my money on an older model? The 5d is overdue to be upgraded. (sigh!) Why care about the rumors? Until we have facts, they mean nothing. I am still using a 20 d as backup camera and time to get another camera. Why throw good money into it? Some time we have to be practical......

No, it would not add credibility in my opinion, but it least it would not be so obvious nonsense. It's pretty clear to me that Canon will introduce a successor for the 5D soon. But it's also pretty clear that the person who made up these specifications knows nothing about that.
