Finally bit on the 17” Epson P900 pigment ink printer yesterday. It fits perfectly in our small apartment, and was effortless to set up —- even the wireless connectivity with my desktop workstation in another room 30 feet away. The iOS Epson Print Layout app on my iPad works flawlessly.

First prints out of the printer were so good and with a few tweaks and saved preset settings, will be repeatable. Of course it is wonderful to be able to produce true Black and White archival prints without having to switch out cartridges.

While I may not have the need for producing many prints as large as the 17”x22” sheet paper that it can handle, I have that ability if I ever need it. Meanwhile I am able to produce all sizes smaller, and at an ink cost of about the half the price of my initial inclination of buying the P700.

A few days in now, and I am so happy with my decision to go with this printer. Anne and I live in a small apartment where our workspaces intersect with our living space. In our case, the printer had to fit into our kitchen. My computer workspace is 30 feet away down a narrow hallway, in our rather large living room. I have had no issues using the Wireless connection to send 50 MB TIFF files from the MacBook to the P900 for printing. The wireless router is right underneath the printer.

For a 17” printer, the Epson is about as compact and light weight as I could find. The other option for a high quality pigment ink printer that would have larger ink tanks, handle papers up to 17”, and fit in the same price range ($1700 CAD) is the Canon Pro-1100. I considered it, but it was far larger and weighed almost 80lb compared to 35lb for the P900.

I was fortunate to find an extremely sturdy ikea table to place it on, for $25 on Facebook marketplace. There are no wobbles or wiggles with its sturdy steel base and solid wood top.

Do you use it often? For what type or size of prints?
I haven’t used it in two years since COVID as we had to move and things were packed. It’s now under my desk and I need to get it transferred to a table. I use it for drafting prints to be printed by a company 40” wide by 50” tall or larger and sealed in plexiglass!

so I want to make sure I am happy before committing to the large expense!

I also use it for printing smaller prints for matting and showing at an exhibition for sale or putting in book style box collections with the name of the model on the outside.
