Ferruginous Pygmy Owl - Costa Rica

I've neglected to post additional shots from my April Costa Rica Photography Workshop, so thought I'd pick up again.

This shot was taken from a new location, a wetlands area, which was very productive. Saw my first Ferruginous Pygmy Owl, which perched for quite a while for us.

Canon 1D Mark 2
Canon 600L/f4 IS
ISO 500, f/4, 1/320 - Manual Exposure

I have also completed plans for my next Costa Rica adventure, which will take place April 27 - May 7, 2012. We'll be visiting both Caribbean and Pacific Coasts, as well as some excellent places inbetween (including the world-famous Rancho Naturalista in the Turrialba area).

If anybody's interested in joining us, just drop me a quick pm or email.

As always, any comments, criticisms, questions, etc. are welcome.

Hi Don,

I just love those little owls! They always look a bit cross and ready for a fight, like the Jack Russel of the bird world.

Regards,

Stuart

Hi, Don,

Great shot.

I was fascinated to learn (from the Wikipedia article on this species) that its call is ordinarily in E-flat (disappointingly, the octave was not mentioned - although that can be problematical, owing to the extensive use of at least three conventions for where the octave numbering starts).

Thanks.

Best regards,

Doug

Yes, Don, my good friend, we've been missing these pictures! Glad at last to see a glimpse of the beauty capturable on your trips and workshops!

Well, this is a beauty worth waiting for! I like the almost painterly soft rendering of the bird with no harsh over-sharpening of the edges and feather detail. A little more sparkle in the eyes, just a tad, could be impressive.

Post this in the end of the forum too where folk can find it.

A very beautiful capture of a great "little" bird. I understand we have them here in the desert as well but I have yet to see one personally. One of your trips is on my bucket list.

Thanks for all the comments.

Stuart - interesting analogy - I can see it!

Doug - I was not aware of the call. I have a fairly poor auditory memory, it seems, and I'm always quite impressed by how our guides down there can so readily identify and locate birds by their calls.

Asher - you might be right. A little extra selective sharpening around the eyes might be a good idea.

James - I'll be glad to have you along whenever you're able to work it out.
