One of the many things illustrated by this fine (!) shot is the clever way that Arizona, on their plates, omits the saguaro that is part of the template (on the left-hand side) when the name or number string is wide (as in this case).

Here we see the template (with the "disabled" logo - handiest example I could find)

The "portrait" is quite amusing and obviously not as easy as it looks composition-wise, but it is much more impressive now that I know how the license plate has been done.
