I saw this site and forum for the first time this morning and was amazed to see the wealth of knowledge that can be gained from some very experienced photographers here.

I hope through time and the sharing of this knowledge, to improve my own photographic skills. My ultimate aim is to earn enough money to support myself and my family whilst doing something that I really enjoy. I have bought some good equipment, and all I need to do now is be able to use it effectively in order to do so. Also that in time, we will all become trusted friends so that we can share some of the good and bad experiences we encounter along the way in order that we learn from each others mistakes.

About me: Born in Blantyre, Malawi 1959. Grew up in Rhodesia until 1981 when I migrated south to South Africa. 1988, moved across to Perth, Western Australia until April 2006 when I migrated cross country to Melbourne.

My Photographic Interests: Sports (motorcycle racing, football, rugby, cricket, golf, horse jumping) Cultural (music and theatre), as well as Landscapes (panoramas) and Wildlife (birds and animals)... as you can see, a very wide ranging interest.

Regards,
Barry.

Where were you in Rhodesia (now zimbabwe under Mugabe)?

Were you a photographer then. I'd love you to dig up and scan pictures if you have them in an old shoebox! All your interests are well represented here.

We are a great bunch and glad to welcome you. We have a good complement of Aussies and a few more can only help!

Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe....

Yes, I was in brought up and went to school in Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe. I was conscripted in January 1977 at 18 years old for a couple of years. Not many people remember this, but it was actually Zimbabwe-Rhodesia for just under a year under the reigns of a chap called Abel Muzarewa. Mugabe started a motion to over-throw Muzarewa, and elections were re-held again in early 1982. Mugabe has since been at the helm of a rudderless ship since. I left Zimbabwe in 1981 and headed to South Africa and then Australia in 1988.

One of my regrets is that at 18 years old, I had not been introduced to photography, otherwise I would have had a wealth of history stowed away in an old shoebox somewhere.

I bought my first camera when I was about 20y/o, which was a Hanimex 110 format. I still have pics from then. I bought my first SLR (Richo KR10) when I was about 22. I still have nearly every photo I have ever taken.

Viva la digital cameras....!!
