Glencoe Images

Hi,

Have just returned from a weekend in Glencoe, Scotland. THe best description of the weather was changeable. Snow, rain, hail, wind and beautiful sunshine - we had it all in the space of 48hrs. Of course such interesting weather makes for some dramatic light, so from a photographic point of view it was fantastic!

There are four images below, with some more on my website at: http://www.astannard.com/glencoe

Comments, critique, questions etc all welcome.

Hi Andrew

Well, No4 is absolutely beautiful, you were very lucky to see Buachaille uncovered in such wonderful light, love the composition, the long exposure, just the right amount of blur to the water, exquisite (and it's my favourite mountain) Did you have to wade through heavy bog to get there? Sorry I haven't time to comment any more just now on the others, but I really like No 3 too, did you get to Glencoe Lochan?

Hi Jan,

Glad you approve! I shall be very envious of you when you move up to Scotland. Much as I like Lancashire I am always in awe of the scenery in north west Scotland.

Image 4 is my favorite too - we were driving up Glencoe and I couldn't believe my luck as the clouds began to break, exposing the lovely early morning sun (about 8.30am I think) - best conditions I've seen it in!

Yes to wading through some bog - but fortunately it was still partly frozen, so only went in to the tops of my shoes! Well worth wet feet though :) Had some fun with filters for that shot, a 1-stop grad over the sky and a 2-stop ND to give the longer exposure. The foreground was still in partial shadow and had a blue-cast, so this area was slightly warmed in Lightroom.

We did get to the Glencoe Lochan, but just as we arrived a horrendous rain-shower started, didn't get the camera out in the end. A lovely spot though, so will save that for the next visit.

Daniel - thanks for your comments too, glad you enjoyed the pictures.

A tranquil sunset with overlapping hills in the distance in Glencoe, Scotland

I can't help going for this one. How can anything beat this. Tell me "it's postcard perfect", I don't care! Don't bother to complain about the compositional asymmetry or suggest a crop. This is what I need to see right now. It provides a bandage of peace, tranquility and sensory assurance! Now printed large, it's a superb photograph to be treasured and handed down. If you were in Southern California*, I think there would be many outlets in Law Offices, Corporations and hospitals where art is needed and this is clear, clean and beautiful.

Thanks,

Asher

*Guys, please don't pack up your art for me to sell yet! It's just that this work could go in a particular store that supports S. California artists only. It would apply to just this work since I know where it would be placed!

Hi Andrew

You were so lucky, I've spent months around Glencoe over the years, and never been lucky enough to get light as good as this, we always refer to the mountains as 'cloud magnets' so often they're either covered in a thick mist/low cloud, or more often than not flat grey light, anyway I'm so glad that you were lucky. Make sure to visit the lochan next time you're up there with this kind of light! I keep coming back for another look, my husband Paul looked last night and the inevitable "wow" came from him, followed by "when are we going back?" I've a feeling that we'll be heading north in January!

Many thanks for showing these, made my day....

Asher - It is pleasing to me that this image generated such an emotional response - conveying emotion is what landscape photography is all about for me, any photography I suppose, so I take such a response as a good sign. A shame I don't live in Southern California, but this is definitely an image I intend to get printed and framed.

Jan - Glad to make your day, I almost feel guilty at how lucky we were with the light! There was another photographer photographing Buachaille, and he had been in the area for 3 weeks before he got the light on that morning. I'm sure you'll enjoy a trip in January. I'm hoping to get up to Torridon at some point in the early new year, but we'll have to wait and see.

Thanks,

Have you been to Torridon before? if not PM me I'll let you know some great places, the Torridon/Applecross area is my absolute favourite area, we know it really well. We're just debating whether to go to Applecross again ourselves in January or Glencoe, but we can only go for a week this time, so Applecross is a long way for just one week...

I'm delighted that you got such wonderful light, it's priceless up there isn't it when you get light like that, all too rare though, so glad you caught it for me to see - thank you!
