At last its past 6pm, for the next 3 hours electricity is up for the entire Island! After sunset I rushed quickly to this part of Apo and shot a few long exposures since light is at its bleakest already. This part of Apo doesn't have any light post or any light source and shooting at these rocks far from the main shore is kinda scary. haha

Now the moon is up and its too tempting to let this pass! So I waited for 250 seconds in almost pitch black condition, scared and uncertain of what the output would be. Sometimes i say to myself "What the hell are you thinking risking the equipment, life, whatever just for a photo!" Then this image came about, nothing special about this one it's just that the Moon made it possible for me to see things at this light.

Hi Karlo, that´s great, you are a brave soul, just keep in mind that by going regularly to these locations all by yourself you are increasing your risks.

I like the photo, the title is very apt. The scenery is certainly mystical and your choice of exposure works really well for the mood of the image. I think the composition is not as strong, IMO perhaps the moon at the right side and a tad lower might balance better. Also, to me the distortion
of the moon looks strange in a photo like this.

Hi Ruben, you are correct.

As one posts more frequently, we also (kind of

) expect progression of quality or new insights, unless one posts outside of one's comfort zone e.g. in the 'Risk it' thread category, or different subjects.

Cheers,

Karlo,

As you can see, Ruben and Bart follow your work closely! That, in a place like this has good sides, (you get a fan base :) ), but the risk is that you are being measured according to what you've already achieved. The first 1/2 dozen times we see ocean spray over rocks and an angry sky, you've got our complete attention and we're just captivated by this earthly raw power and splendor.

Then what?

How do we go from these shots. What's the next stage in the journey or do we just revisit? That's very hard. It's like seeing nude images, weeping willow trees, flocks of flamingos. They are all exciting and fascinating. Still, without much art and a new edge, they too can lose the charm to our following.

So that's the challenge. How do we get to the next stage? I find that with my own work. One thing I try to do is to visit galleries, look at magazines, shop windows, meet new people, go to something very different. Then I change my setup for lighting/ perspective, lens motif, put everything upside down. I think about how I can approach things differently, make sketches, but somehow I have to find for myself a better way of expressing my talent in images than what I did last year.

I can admit to you, that right now, I ask myself the same questions of my own work. Just to let you know it's not a unique situation. Be thankful, this is a forum where we risk rejection by not always saying the, "Wow! Great picture!" that the exact same photo would have called for when you joined! This way we expect more of you and also you must expect more of us too.
