The lens may or may not be great, but for sure I like the photograph. When ever one gets to see just part of something it provides an extra boost of interest to the picture and in this case gives movement. I'd work on that eye to try to make the front of it with the light point sharp and the back part less so. Just experiment with that and see if possibly the fish movement increases.
To know if the lens is better than your other lenses we'd need matched images. However, I do like this picture and it's a step forward.

This image is on an entirely different level than those you've shown before - (comparing with http://www.openphotographyforums.com/forums/showthread.php?p=40944#post40944 for example, even after sharpening, and that was pdg.) Now you need to try the lens outside, I guess. Just superb.

Thanks Ray. I am in awe of this lense so far. Looking back at fish pictures I've taken over the years, even ones that I thought were "pdg", are blown away. It was just a short thrown together session to try the lense but I am really pleased. I hardly have to touch the RAWs. The 40D with this lense seems to be a great combination.
I am so busy right now that I haven't used it again. I am planning on getting outdoors with it as soon as I have some spare time.
Here is another from the same session. The fish was just on the edge of the flash zone (not enough light to the front) but it still shows a lot of detail.

Very simple Johnny. Flash on top of tank. Sometimes with a softbox to spread the light out more with 2 flashs and one from the front at an angle turned way down for a little fill.
