Green Heron low to the water

I was able to inch my way up to this green Heron. Photo is from about 15 feet, basically laying on the ground for the shot.

Cloudy days are great!

Eric Diller: Green Heron

Eric,

This is a fabulous shot. So crisp and clean and the rounded shape of the bird's body makes a good composition with the rectilinear plant branches. What other pictures did you get then. I'd love to see more!

Very definitive shooting style! Is this cropped?

Almost full frame Asher (95%)...I was so close I barely got him in the frame! Just trimmed away a little dead space. I have a few other poses I will add to this post later today.

Agreed - this is a fine shot. Crisp, great angle, pose, composition.

Agreed on the advantage of clouds for some shooting - ideal is always early morning/late evening, with the light generally behind you, but when that's not an option, having some clouds diffusing the light can be put to good use, as you did here!

Eric,

How big is this bird? What is it's food? Seems small but it's difficult to judge!

Asher, bird is about 19" in its normal state. With his long neck he is even bigger than that. They like to stay crunched up (like my photo) and than spring the heads out into the water for minnows even small frogs.

Not sure if I shared these yet.....

Now we can see the long heron neck and the green plumage! Like all other forms of investigation, one single perspective can be very deceiving. I have never seen this color feathers in a heron. Makes sense is it feeds in the shrubbery by the water's edge.

I've enjoyed this thread, and hope you don't mind my throwing in a couple of images.

As you and Asher have identified, Green Herons can look quite different, depending on their activity. I've often noticed this, and offer these 2 images as examples of this difference:
