According to a friend who is a major bird shooter, this Great Egret is getting mating plumage, thusly showing off.

Correct - the 'fancy' breeding feathers are referred to as 'Aigrettes' which led to the common name "Egret" for many of these species.

The dark green lores of this Egret are also a breeding color change.
