I Suspect You're Going to Think I'm Nuts....

and I cannot explain my "arc of intent" other than the concept fascinates me, but...anyone see any value in this at all?

I'd like a title for the series if Im to get your concept easily. At present we have just two instances of your photographs of a broken glass. The first has the shadow falling away to the right and the second has the shadow caught, it seems, close to the glass itself by curving up the paper background or else moving the light source.

I don't know, quite yet, what you intend, but that's fine. Left to themselves, as a ditypch, I'd think of the glass as a trophy, evidence or weapon, as the broken pieces have been left behind. With that, I'd imagine the scenarios that each might trigger.

However, likely as not, your object was not to create a free for all in my devious mind. You have a concept: what is it?

Nuts? No...
I'm not sure where you're going with this, however I think it may bear fruit in the end.
The first image left me flat, but once I saw the second, I thought "Hmmm....."
In that second image there's an interesting curve of the shadow that lends so much to the overall.
Maybe consider that path, and pursue capturing an interaction between the object and it's shadow?

I'm having a very difficult time articulating what I see in that. The broken glass means something to me and I can't pull it out yet. The angles, the interrupted lines, the shattered promise, maybe, is what is drawing me. I'm certain there is something there but I'm having great difficulty honing in on what it is. I was hoping someone might say something that triggered it and brought it to a conscious level for me.

The first image makes me think of the final sips of an amazing glass of wine that was so passionate that seeing the bottom of the glass enduced rage enough to shatter the bowl and the view point of looking down at the result of this emotional process. I can picture the shards surrounding the base of the glass in the image. For me this is very personal; I love good wine and hate seeing the bottom of the glass.

The broken goblet to me is a very powerful sentiment. It is meant to be used at a moment of celebration, and it being broken envokes a sence of sadness, of celebration lost. I like the photo with the complete shadow, and I think you have a good motiff going here.

Thanks for the input. I'm having a hard time seeing how to take it to something exceptional. I'm not sure what's missing. I'm studying the light, but so far, no go.

I really like the crystal on the black background. I'm questioning whether this would look better with a bit more light on the glass from above to highlight the edges more and give the glas more glow or if I prefer the look as is with the back edge fading off into the abyss.

A couple things you could try... Bounce a flash off the ceiling to get a bit of top down light annd just turn the flash down a bunch so it isn't over powering. If you want to have some home made fun, you could use a flash light and create your own snoot by rolling paper around the head of it and have a specific sized spot light. This could giive you what you are looking for potentially.
