In Love with Red River Papers

Other than ordering several packs of the small photo card paper from Red River Paper in Texas, this is first time that I have placed an order for photo paper for creating my prints up to 17” x 22” using my Epson P900. A month ago I paid for a couple of their Sample Packs to see how I like the different surfaces. Up until now it has just been easier to order a box of Koala paper in their 8x10 and 11x17 sizes from Amazon when I need it. I really wanted to have some 16x20 or 17x22 paper on hand now that I can print that size with my new Epson P900. Koala doesn’t offer that size, and there was not an economical product available from Amazon. So it was time to bite the bullet and put an order in to Red River and see how it goes.

I ordered 1-100 pack of 8x10, 1-50 pack of 11x14, and 1-50 pack of 17x22, 68 lb Ultra Pro Satin Photo Paper from @redriverpaper

I was pleasantly surprised at the ease of ordering directly from the company - only taking 5 days to have the package shipped across the border to Canada by FedEx - no extra duties or tariffs added on to the cost (only the USD to CAD conversion) —— and the fact that the package was received with the boxes of paper in prestige condition. The paper that I get through Amazon always seems to end up with a ding or slight crease in one of the corners.

This is so impressive! Obviously, Red River want you to be proud of getting their paper and go to the trouble of packing their products with extra respect!

They also include a very solid guarantee sheet in the package that states to check the order as soon as it is open and contact them immediately if anything isn’t perfect. If I lived in the USA, I would have had Free shipping. Even so, it didn’t bother me at all paying $35 for FedEx ground to get that large package to me at my home, safe and sound in a reasonable time. I even notice that I have almost $7.00 in Rewards points for my purchases that can apply to future orders. Nice and simple process for me https://www.redrivercatalog.com/

It is so good to hear of this successful acquisition.

I have so are only worked with samples from the Red River Sample Kit, but I was very impressed by how that was turned out.

My first 17”x22” print on my Epson P900. Using the Red Rive4 satin paper I just got in. The close proximity of phone really amplified the noise while printing. It has been suggested that I change the paper setting to think paper to soften that grinding noise when the print head gets to the right side. Hoping that is not an issue with my new printer.

Also using Red River 11”x14” that I just got in, with the ABW setting on the Epson for a really nice neutral black and white print. I sped the complete process to one minute. It actually took 2-1/2 minutes from start to finish

Which papers did you like out of the Sample Pack, Doug?

Hi, Rob,

You know, that was a while ago, and just now I'm not sure. In any case, it did not lead me to order any - I do little photo printing these days.

As to greeting cards, of which we do some, I have been using the Inkpress Archival Greeting Cards stock, which seem to do very well.

But when our inventory of that runs out, we will probably start trimming greeting card blanks out of a large supply of cover stock we have.

I'm sure that the "quality" of these stocks is less than for one of the Red River stocks, but the cards are very nice and well serve our purpose (which is typically to send thank you notes for Carla's birthday gifts or various other kindnesses, etc.). We don't sell cards, nor present them as "art".

We do not find the lack of pre-scoring of the latter card stock a bother. I am able to well fold the printed cards using a tiny carpenter's square (50 mm × 100 mm) as an alignment guide. (Even when using the pre-scored Inkpress stock, I found that I wanted to use the alignment guide to get as precise a fold as I wanted. In fact, in some case the pre-score fought me on that! That suggests that the pre-scoring was not "accurate" on that stock.)

We print the cards, by the way, on our Canon Pixma G3270 four-color "up to letter size" refillable-tank inkjet printer, which does a really nice job

Best regards,

Doug

I know I have let this get way off the original topic, but given that I did discuss here our folding of photographic greeting cards, I thought I would finish the affront with a picture of the "baby carpenter's square" we use to guide our folding.

I have no idea what the intended purpose of this item is. It is clearly not intended to be a "prop" in a miniature scene, as the markings are "actual size".

It is stainless steel, and thick enough that both leaves of the printed card can be easily made to lie along its edges.

Here is a link to the current form of the original Amazon listing. I note that this does not exactly match the item I have! (Nor does it completely make sense!)
