Lack of funds has reduced the ability of the state to maintain park trails and infrastructure. This results in far fewer visitors and a slow return of the area to its natural state. This is good, and is bad, depending on one's point of view.

Tom,

It's not often that nature is given a break although in the end, it always will decide our fate too! In this image, the mist helps create an early morning still mood and the ducks give us scale. I wonder if you have what's on the left in another image?

Asher,

Yup -

The little things in the foreground were actually boulders. They tend to roll around from season to season, and served as an anchor in this b&w version taken last year -

Thanks for looking and commenting, man. My images from the midwest is tame and boring compared to most stuff posted hereabouts.

Hi Tom

Have to say I agree with Cedric, I think these are very nice, particularly the last two, beautifully and sensitively composed.

Hi Cedric and Janet,

Thank you both very much for your comments.

The area at the falls is essentially a large inverted dome. Several interconnected caves exist in the canyon walls, which gives the place the sort of atmosphere that trolls, elves, and troglodytes are known to favor.

The objective of the first photo was to invoke a sense of mystery by using shadow. The second two were were created with more familiar types of composition.

I like these photos. They really make me long to be there. I have about 12 months left of school and then I plan to work and travel. I can't wait to travel to places just like this picture!! :)

Nicole,

The Illinois River Valley area has a unique beauty. The canyons and bluffs are mostly located near the intersection of the LaSalle anticline and the river. You should be able to find interesting subjects for photography during any season, but mid-winter is my favorite time of year.

Drop me a line when you are ready to visit, and I'll be happy to provide suggested destinations and directions on how to get to them.
