Lunch

Sunny lunch in Paris (La Défense) :

I begin to really like this little DP2 despite of his flaws... I think i should have shot this picture moving a little on the left, to better align the reading woman with the Grand Arche in the background.

Cedric Massoulier: Sunny lunch in Paris (La Défense)

So, as last the two of you, the DP2 and you, Cedric, my friend, are getting to know one another! What is it that you find so much more satisfying today the camera? I've never used one but am interested as you were hesitant to give it any praise before!

This scene is charming and almost as if it was a stage set of people taking their lunch break. It's very difficult to compose with the people who just happen to be seated in the wrong position. Would you ever, in Paris, ask the lady to move to the more suitable position or that would not be acceptable? There are interesting elements, male and female in the architecture.

I think you should proceed further with your ideas of arrangement, even if you have to arrive at dawn with your own person to position as you wish! To me what's important is to not compromise in expressing your intent. That, to me at least, is rather sacred.

Thanks for sharing, especially Paris!

Asher

Hi,

Concerning the DP2s, i am very impressed by both its color rendition and its native sharpness. As you may know, it's a camera which uses a special sensor called Foveon, a tri-layers sensor with no anti-alias filter and no Bayer matrix. Results are wonderful colors and a perfect sharpness with absolutely no softness at 100% in PS. Definition of files is quite low but quality is so high that you can make very good prints. Lens is excellent. Image quality is really fantastic at low isos (50 - 200 iso), as good and even better than Leica M8 for instance.

Flaws are now well known : antic and minimal design, slow AF, not very compact, little poor defined screen, bad high sensibilities, general slowness (power-on, write on SD card, ...), a bit of visible distortion...

But, when one uses it in the street, it's a real pleasure ! I would not keep it as my principal camera but it's a very good second camera to bring everywhere and everyday.

Regards,

Cedric.

PS : i would not ask a Parisian woman to move to be correctly shot ;)

Then, Cedric, why not just pick a beautiful one and tell her how you feel about her or else a man/woman you know and arrive at dawn!

Asher

BTW, I always ask and, at least here in Los Angeles, the worse is that she's refuse but there's a 90& chance she'd agree!

Cedric, with respect I find it to be a little mundane. As a street photograph the image doesn't mean or say that much to me.
What does that screen display on the left-side of the image? Are they adverts?

Does the camera's slow AF, limit it's use on the street at all?

The screen at the left displays adverts and sometimes TV news... Again a pollution of our visual environment, it seems there's no noise and ads enough in Paris...

I didn't really try the DP2s to make real street shots but i think it's too slow to really perform in this kind of photography. Even if you use manual focus (it works quite good with a dedicated wheel on the body), camera is very slow to power on... I think it's a wonderfull camera to stay in a place and to take contemplative or very prepared shots. Excellent for urban landscapes too.
