Memories of NYC

As you know, our friend John Angulat is a street shooter in NYC. We have been discussing his great body of work in this thread and it got me to thinking about the pictures I took in New York during various visits in the past. I started digging in my archives and eventually came across these pictures. These were the pictures of happy memories then, now only to be associated with great sadness and grief. Memories of days gone by and of things which will never be the same again. I just wanted to honor them by sharing these pictures here with you, that's all.

PS: Apologies about the poor image quality, scanned from fading Ektachrome slides using a DSLR.

Hi Mike,

What a different look from your current work!
Well it is quite logical as these were originally taken as holiday snapshots, mere mementos as Asher refers to those. And the fact that they were captured using film.

Besides, I am rather glad that my work has evolved somewhat in the meantime. Or is it regression to your mind? ;-)

Cheers,

No, there was no thought of regression:) It's just very striking how different your work looks with the advent of HDR in particular. Increased resolution is always available (OK Bart, I know there are technical issues!) from film by just going bigger.

If you ever want a few slides scanning hen you can always send them over and I'll hapily run them through the scanner for you. I am slightly concerned that your dslr will do a better job!

Cheers

Mike

Always warms my heart to see another's images of my hometown.

Sad, yes.
Very sad.
You had to be there.
Only we know what it was really like.
Like many others, I knew people who died. Responders and innocents.
After all these years I cry easily at the memory.
The smell was the worst.
It lingered in the air for weeks, burning, death...
You could actually taste it.
It changed me.
It changed many.

Never again.

Yes indeed, let's hope that such madness will never happen again. I know for sure that it must have changed you. The fact is, it has changed the whole world albeit not at a personal level like yours.

I knew well that I was treading on thin ice when I posted these, as I did not want to scratch open any wounds. In the end I decided that we should never forget what has happened. I did this to show my respect to those who have suffered. I hope you'll understand.

Your good friend.

My dear friend, no offense taken.
We do well to remember.
It is when we forget we do a disservice to the memory.
Thank G-d or whatever higher power we may believe in for photographs!
