Misty winter morning

Cheers,

It seems that this thread is turning into a tête-à-tête, so I'll take my parting shot with the following pictures.

Hi Cem,

Thanks for kicking-off this thread in the first place. It's too bad it didn't inspire more, beside Mike, to post their own misty mornings (even one from other seasons would have been tolerated;-) ).

For those interested, what started off with this scene, with another photographer setting up his gear:

615-617_S1.jpg

resulted in your image by that photographer:

f19589_02.jpg

It could be a subject for another thread, somewhat like seeing one's own multiple reflections when standing between mirrors or shooting onself tethered as seen live on a display, images by a photographer as observed by a(nother) photographer:

Thanks for completing the chained photograph (it would have taken a third photographer, with a wetsuit, to complete the circle ;-) ).

Cheers,
Bart

I took these in 2005 with the 20D. It was before I got the 70-200 2.8 IS L so they must have been taken with the 70-200 f4 L that I had earlier.
I never processed them until now since I didn't like them. I still don't like them but they are the only photos I have with mist. Shot just after daylight before sunrise. I have heard a lot of people refer to this as smoke on the water.

Humbly submitted.

Thanks Ron, for being a sport. Some more foreground detail could have helped, but it's not always available when we need it most.

It's always a challenge to capture such phenomena, and produce a pleasing picture at the same time. Your skills have grown between then and now, so perhaps it's time to seek for such an occasion again. By knowing where to look and some understanding of the weather forecast things can turn in our favour, and a bit of luck also never hurts.

One thing is for sure, if we don't go out and seek for it, we're unlikey to find it.

Cheers,
Bart

I was looking at some shots and think I found another mist or land vapor.

Cadillac mountain, Acadia Nat. Park before sunrise last October at about 28 deg F with the wind just howling. I about froze my fingers with everything intensified with severe back pain ( I should have been home in bed ).

Probably crap, but this isn't my field.

This is lovely too Cem, with the cow and calf so gently portrayed and expertly framed, beautiful tranquil scenes that I'm enjoying, thank you for sharing these with us.

Hi Ron,

Thanks a lot for chiming in, as Bart said this is very supportive of you.
I think the images you have shown are indeed not the best ones but they are not as bad as you think they are either. In all cases, cropping away the sky portion (fully in the first two, only till the cloud formations in the last one) would improve the images IMO. Also, you need to find a way to reduce the contrast in dark areas, possibly by using a highlight/shadow adjustment or something like that. Thanks for sharing :)

Cheers,

Am I too late?

I've been trawling through some old negative scans and come up with these.

First two from November 1996. We went down to the lake (Derwentwater) early, hoping to catch the first launch to the start of a planned long walk. Unfortunately it was postponed until the mist cleared.

And next a pano from November 1997 of two images shot from Dodd, which is a blip on the flanks of Skiddaw, Englands 4th highest mountain. Taken with a 35mm P&S of dubious quality, I wasn't going to bother with them but quite liked the light.
On the left Keswick and Derwentwater; on the right the Newlands valley.

Hi Stuart,

Not at all, the more the merrier,

I've been trawling through some old negative scans and come up with these.

I especially like the composition of the second one. The mist slowly dissolving under the influence of the sun, against a backdrop of mountains, something that cannot be found in the low countries.

And next a pano from November 1997 of two images shot from Dodd, which is a blip on the flanks of Skiddaw, Englands 4th highest mountain. Taken with a 35mm P&S of dubious quality, I wasn't going to bother with them but quite liked the light.

The light is beautiful, and I like panoramas for landscapes a lot.

Bart

Hi Stuart,

As you say the light is quite good in those images, especially the last one. I am amazed to see that a negative scan coming from a good old 35mm P&S can deliver such acceptable results. Of course we are looking at the image at a reduced size, meaning that the full sized image can exhibit less sharpness and exposure problems and/or lens aberrations. Nevertheless, it is a good image with the magic of light. Thanks for deciding to share these anyway, otherwise we would have missed them.

Early morning mist following torrential rain

Hi Jan,

I envy the landscape opportunities you have, with hills and mountains which is something we don't really have in the Netherlands.

At this small size your image looks very busy/restless, so this probably is best seen at a large size. I would have probably tried to get the boat at the left side of the image, but I don't know how much manoeuvring space you had.

Thanks for adding it to the thread.

Hi Bart

This shot was taken from the garden of the cottage we stayed in last year, I woke up and literally ran down the garden still in PJ's and flip-flops to get this before the light disappeared, there was a stream to my side which I couldn't cross, I have a few variations but I think this was the best of them.....

Ah! There it is again, one of my favourite images of yours! I have told you previously how much I've liked this image and the sentiments have become only stronger. Love to see it again and thanks for sharing :)

Thanks Bart. I seem to remember that there were more frames on either side of this. I'll have to track them down.

Hi Cem,

It used to produce excellent images in ideal conditions, but for the example here I wouldn't like to go very much larger. You can already notice the grain/noise.

Stuart

Cem, Bart, Janet, Ron, Stuart, Mike and those who are right now digging through their collections, (or dreaming of doing the same), congratulations on bringing to us such a fine shared experience. What's obvious here is that the common elements are mist, mystery, revelation and beauty. I am profoundly impressed and feel privileged that each of you contribute to share this room with us in OPF and transform it into a gallery worthy of revisiting.

What I especially appreciate is that this collection of images is built out of passion from within you. Each discovers to us these striking gaps in the hard complex world around us to see the simple beauty that's always there in landscapes around us.

It also shows, once again, that clarity and sharp definition is hardly a necessity in releasing such beauty.

Asher
