Ian,

This is a surprise. No woman, no beer, no glitter.

There's a powerful rectangle of muscle and force. It seems as if it might rotate clockwise but there's balance. Covering all this power is a strip of an undershirt and stopping the rotation is the fixed fine point logo © Second Focus.

I admire the simplicity of the composition and the aggressive crop. We have enough to get the sense of things, a man trained far beyond the strength of 'most everyone and at the top of his class, blood in excess rushing through those oversize veins.

Good job!

Asher

A question on color: is it a bit yellow or is that the chosen "look"?

The answer is yes it is part of the look.

Here is a slideshow of others from that series...

The series, Ian is a delight. I am enjoying it immensely. I appreciate the consistency of the imaging of this remarkable athlete.

Now, might you share the lighting technique used. Was this just one large lightbox? Did you use gels to get the color or is it tungsten available light of the gym?

Thanks!

The color is generated from a "tweak" I created in Lightroom. I have created 4 or 5 processes that I apply to photos for specific looks and then adjust them individually from there.

The lighting was a Profoto Acute 2400r with two heads, each with a large silver umbrella. In this photo I probably had one to my left as the main and one further out to my right as an accent. They are usually some distance to the sides to eliminate their reflection in the mirrors in the gym on the wall behind him.

However sometimes I will leave the lights right in the scene for different effects.

Hi, Ian,

Stunning shot, and an incredible physique.

I find the skin texture and coloration unnatural and unappealing. The surface conveys the texture of coarsely reinforced plaster. The coloration is evocative of the almost-iridescent bronze we find on urns in garden shops, with the uniformity of chromaticity almost suggesting old-school hand coloration.

But perhaps this is what is expected in this milieu.

Thanks for letting us see your work in this specialized field.
