Having just fetched a load of laundry from a machine that adds bleach or softener at will, and another which dries to a zillion different heat settings, I look at this laundry and marvel at both how far man has come and yet marvel that the man I speak of is a nonexistent entity to the launderers of Mumbai. The world, as I am reminded in these images is always in a constant flux of modern and primitive. Interesting dichotomy.

These images are so interesting. So much to see. I cannot believe how labor intensive this must be considering modern alternatives. I also wonder how they keep track of what belongs to their clients. I also noticed that they don't use clothespins; they simply push the clothes between the twists in the ropes, which seems good but I imagine must cause some amount of pain to the people having to push the clothes through.

Thanks for posting this; very interesting photos, indeed!

This is my favorite! Nigel and really wonderful to see. I would have loved to have been right behind you. This is hard work but the organization makes it work! I think there's a great potential for more work. This alone would be reason for me to to visit Mumbai!

Hey Nigel, well done for shooting these scenes, they offer up such a huge amount of interest. I am amazed by what I see here.
Your first two initial images really sum up everything and they greatly document the scene. We can see how your very first image works in the far bigger setting of the second, of course it appears in the upper top left of the second image. The human elements in these two images are nicely portrayed also...
Any chance of seeing them in B&W?

Actually Asher wanted to play with these images a little so I have sent him the files from my Indian trip , so it will be interesting to see his interpretations.

I will look at some b/w conversions although it might be a shame to lose some of the variety of colour

In this case I would swap colour for symmetry any day of the week...
