LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., OCTOBER 15, 2007 - Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging, today announced the development of two all-new telephoto lenses for use with its EOS SLR cameras: the EF200mm f/2L IS USM*/** and the EF800mm f/5.6L IS USM*/**. The Company will exhibit prototypes of the new lenses at PhotoPlus Expo (booth #318), taking place at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City, October 18 to 20.

The new Canon EF200mm f/2L IS USM and EF800mm f/5.6L IS USM, both of which are L (luxury)-series lenses incorporating a high-performance Image Stabilizer, feature optical systems utilizing special optical materials such as fluorite to correct chromatic aberrations, making possible high-resolution, high-contrast shooting performance.

The Canon EF200mm f/2L IS USM, targeting users who seek a brighter lens for portraiture and indoor sports photography, realizes a large aperture of f/2. The EF800mm f/5.6L IS USM, expected to deliver telephoto performance surpassing the current top-of-the-line EF600mm f/4L IS USM super telephoto lens, is being developed in response to requests from users working in the fields of sports and news photography who are looking for a high-performance lens that offers a longer focal length.

“These new lenses demonstrate that Canon is continuing to respond actively and flexibly to the wide-ranging needs of professional and advanced amateur users, with the aim of contributing to the expansion of photographic possibilities for SLR cameras,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, senior vice president and general manager, Consumer Imaging Group, Canon U.S.A. “Canon’s EOS System is the premier brand of Digital SLR cameras, and we take great pride in offering the world’s largest selection of interchangeable autofocus lenses.”***

As these new lenses are currently under development, pricing and availability information is not yet available.

As the 600mm is already too heavy for me (the reason why I got the 500 mm "only"), I bet one will have to ingest a lot of testosterone to be able to play a full day with the 800 mm beast!

For now, for my banker and for me (and my muscles!), the 1Ds3 and 14mm are enough!

The 200mm ƒ2 will certainly be a beautiful piece of glass…

I could maybe sell the 70-200ƒ2.8 IS and get the 135 and this 200… primes! primes!

The 200mm lens might well devalue the rather rare, much desired and super costly 200 1.8L. Nowadays, with Canon's higher usable ISO settings and IS, the new lens would be equivalent to at least 1.2 in imaging capability, except for "character".

If the focus is faster, then the 200 1.8L will be relegated to just a collectors and boasting item!

Now the 800mm lens, that's another matter. Seems like a bazooka LOL! Perhaps they have used special lighter weight alloys!

I do like the new EF 800, although i'm guessing ~£8k minimum, any advances?

No doubt the birder's will take to it and off-load their ef500s )

Wow, this is interesting! I was wondering when they would do an 800mm again - there is a very nice FD-mount 800mm L sitting in a second-hand camera store close to me, and I always wondered why they never filled that niche again.

Now, the 200mm will be interesting. I think it's a pity they didn't stick to the 1.8 aperture (such a beautiful number coupled with '200') but what I am far more interested to see, is if they will manage to match the legendary optical performance of the 200/1.8? Or exceed it?

Since they far exceeded the performance of the 50/1.0L with the new 50/1.2L, maybe this will also be the case with the 200mm?

I'm sure the 200 2.0 is going to be a favorite fashion lens and will be a notch above the 70-200 2.8L in the character of the image.

One copy has my name on it!

What price?

Asher

I am just hoping that this release pushes down the price of the second-hand 200/1.8 sales - I so dearly want one of those! (but, alas, far out of my price range for a lens I'd not use all the time)

New lenses from Canon....

Thanks for letting me know about these lenses. I was planning on a couple of new lenses, so maybe these will be the ones. I don't expect them to be cheap at all, but I think these lenses are what Canon needs to complete the range.

The 800mm will be ideal for surfing photography as well.

Cheers ....
