New York

My sister is going to New York on the 15 of January (lucky she is), and I know some of you know or even live there.

She likes art photography even tough she shoots only for travel or for her work as a screen-printer. She was stolen her Nikon FM last year.

1-Is there is a place where you can find real bargains on 35mm SLR and films?...(I know NY is big and I don't know where she is staying).

2-Is there any worth visiting photography exhibitions during the fortnight, from the 15?

3-What else valuable is to do? (she's been to NY twice I think, so I assume she'd already visited the obvious stuffs)

Thanks for sharing your ideas!

Bonjour Sandrine,
..1-Is there is a place where you can find real bargains on 35mm SLR and films?...(I know NY is big and I don't know where she is staying).
The two most obvious stores to visit for realistic/bargain prices in Manhattan are:
1) B&H Photo Video
2) Adorama
I have been a customer at both and recommend them fully. They are also easily accessible. Be aware that local sales tax is added to web prices when buying at the store

Regarding the photography expositions, I am not sure which current ones are worth visiting, but I know that there is always something which is worth visiting somewhere in NYC. She can find out easily by asking the locals when she is there or consult resources such as Time Out.

One of my personal favorites which I always re-visit when in NYC is the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). Most other museums are worth visiting too, actually almost all of them, lol. Depends on what her interests are really. For the rest, just enjoy the intensity of life, architecture, sounds, smells; which are all around/encompassing :).

Cheers,

Hi Sandrine,
Cem's already pointed you in the correct direction regarding photography outlets.
B&H is a must-go, if no more than for the experience.
They also (and Adorama) have a fairly substantial used equipment department.
There may be some good bargains to be had.

Regarding photo exhibitions, try looking at the New Yorker magazine's arts listing.

I'll always try to recommend what not to do whilst in New York.
Here's a pretty good guide: http://www.concierge.com/ideas/hotspots/tours/500723?page=1

New York's a pretty expansive place. I could write paragraph after paragraph on what to see, where to go, etc.
Is she visiting alone, with family, children?

I am pretty sure that it's not as expensive as Paris, where she lives...But for sure money will taken in consideration...

She might be visiting alone, AFAIK, we are a family of nullipara. She got time of her own, and she likes wandering alone.

I'll pass on the links you gave me.... Maybe your other half's restaurant is too far from NY :) , I didn't check on Google earth .
