These work so well together Rob! Explain the exquisite shape in the first. The lower right border is an arm - but what makes the rest of the shape?

I was looking for an interesting viewpoint. For years in my wedding photography, I have used people to frame my subject - - - so when I noticed this lady standing in the front row of the line with her hand on her hip (top left pic), I moved up behind her and fired through the opening in her arm.

That is one very good use for the flip out screen on my Olympus E-PL5 - - - I love using it. It was very very difficult aiming to get an angle on the woman cooking through the tiny opening in the arm, and then to try to frame her properly as she was moving quickly back and forth and in and out of view of the camera lens.

Actually I wasn't positive that I got a good shot or one that was well in focus - - - and so I went up behind my wife Anne and told her to put her hand on her hip so I could shoot through it. It didn't really work. Even with a setting like this, the staged arm does not compare to that of the natural stance without any idea that I was behind taking pictures.

As for the background in the lower right corner - it is colourful chairs and tablecloths showing through under the cooking barrel.

This is the full series of shots that I took over a period of a few minutes, as they came out of the camera.

MEN IN THE MORNING

20141231-EPL58739-Edit.jpg

I noticed the police man that is always walking around in Central Park, had purchased some food from a vendor to the left of the men - and then walked in front of them talking and shaking a few hands. When I noticed that he was going to step up and walk behind them for some reason, I got my camera ready to capture the moment when he would be in the open. I never anticipated though that someome would be mimicking his stride in the upper floor window of the church. I took 2 other photos - one shorty before this and one after as he passed behind the men --- but this is the frame that worked.

FIRST PHOTO OF 2015

Walking along a mud path out in a remote rural area of the city, I noticed these boys playing football in a big bare patch of earth - where 2 trees formed the net. I walked up and grabbed a few shots - then called them over to show close up views of this frame, right after the goal was scored. All gathered around my small camera and laughed in acceptance of the shot. Hopefully I will get back to give them each a print.

Bob,

I appreciate so much your openness to showing how you got these great environmental people pictures. The staging of the arm is merely an adjustment to what's there all the time. The truth of the matter is that you took us into this hot steamy busy bustling cooking cavern and that is marvelous!

Bob,

I love the peak action you have caught. Maybe you have more of this game. or you just passed by. I'd try to get kids clear of trees, or else combine figures from successive shots, if both your patience and conscience allow, LOL! An easy approach would be a "content-aware" delete of the fellow on the right as he's not needed for the power of the entire composition. In fact, the shoes on the right become far more important in adding interest and entry to the picture.

Hopefully, years hence, their grandchildren will be astonished that some of them usually played barefoot. Actually, shoes are very badly designed an impair the advantageous spring function of the lower limb, wherein a huge fraction of the impact energy of the foot hitting the ground is returned in getting it into the air again.

They will make far better olympic athletes, LOL than any of us!

BILLARES ARE FAMOUS

In Nicaragua, Billiard Halls (billiares) are famous and are the landmarks by which you find your way to and around a Barrio or are the words you holler out to tell the bus to stop at a corner where one exists.

While I could have taken photos through the open doorway that everyone enters through - I found the ornate metal railing over the side door, framed the interior well. I got into a position where the fellow shooting was framed unobstructed and highlighted:

"2 Doors Down"

I really liked the colours and character of this wall. While I have a shot taken with and without the man walking through - - - my preference is almost always to include the human interest element as I have done here.

THE ICE MEN

It was delivery time for ice around the city. Huge blocks were lined up along the outside walls of hotels - fully exposed to the heat and sun.

Walking back to the area where the truck was, an hour or so later, I found the street congested with vendors from all over the city - purchasing and filling their carts with the blocks of ice and chopping it up with ice picks in order that it could fit inside the insulated shells.

WAITING PATIENTLY

I actually took this photo from the bus window while driving through a small rural town. Lens perspective was corrected in Lightroom as my shooting angle was not square on and was high shooting down - so both vertical and horizontal correction.

Being that the lower eye level window was dark from tint and scratched, I tilted out my cameras LCD screen and raised the camera to the open upper window (these are old school buses called Chicken Buses). A fast shutter speed stopped the action for me as I framed using the screen. I managed to fire off 3 frames, with this being the best composed. Taken with Olympus E-PL5 w/ 14-42 kit lens.

WORKING ON A SERIES I THINK

Seems that I'm starting to get a good collection of "people in doorway" photographs. Maybe going to have to focus on putting some of them together as a collection.

Hi Rob,

Absolutely worthwhile to make a theme collection of that. Your environment apparently offers many opportunities for a "People in doorway" series, and the colorful surroundings will make sure that there is enough variation for the viewers to stay interested.

Thanks for sharing.

Cheers,

Thank you Bart

I do believe that I have and will find some nice variations of the theme. Here are a few examples that I found from recent days of shooting:

The photos of the ice delivery is incredible. I had no idea people still bought ice like that. I just assumed everyone had electric freezers.

As for the pictures in doorways, I think it makes for a great series and especially love the little boy with the red metal gate - that is simply gorgeous! You'll have to make a book!

Rob,

These are all praiseworthy images and do well in color. You are fortunate to have the time to be able to do this work. Are you participating in any communal connections too?

Once again Rob, you succeed very well in using the view through an object manner of revealing a scene and it works, putting us as unseen observers too. You diid it above using the cooks bent arm and here you've used the same stratagem. Make a series like the doorways!

BEGGAR LADY

I took 2 photos of her as I approached - but she was looking right at me and I felt guilty taking the shots. So I gave her 5 cords, and then she posed for me like this. I got off one shot and my battery went dead. End of shooting for the day LOL.

Again, lots of really interesting photographs. What are cords (is that money?) The beggar lady looks very old but still quite clean with cloths that appear to have been ironed.

Cord is short for Cordoba - the National currency. 5 cords currently is roughly equal to 20 cents in U.S. Currency. Mostly they would be seeking 1 cord, but I felt generous today lol.

A local working at an American owned hotel as a guard or cleaning, may make 60 to 90 cordobas for a shift, and that shift may be 10-12 hours. A skilled worker may make 150 to 300 cordobas per day. The good paying job everyone desires, is working for the call centers in Managua where everyone gets the same $500 U.S.D. per month working 6 days a week.

Things that impress Anne and I about this poor country, are the personal pride and relative cleanliness, white white clothes always, and well cared for teeth. This woman may not be as old as she looks. It is very seldom that we see people much over 70 years of age. It is always a surprise when we find out that people whom we thought were in their mid 60's or 70's, are younger than we are (which is 58 years old). She may be late 60's to early 70's but certainly not 80's or 90's I suspect.

A DIFFERENT PACE

Anne and I headed up into the mountains for a few days this weekend - - - coffee country. It was strange sleeping under a sheet and comforter because of the cool night air. It was wonderful.

We headed out to a reserve in the late afternoon. Cascada Blanca, has an inviting pool (very cold water) at the base of its falls. Walking around behind the falls and into the huge cave ridge that has been carved into the edge of the mountain - was a great experience.

I LOVE KIDS - AND KIDS LOVE ME

Photo from today in a remote small town. These children were playing in the doorway of a store where Anne and I stopped to get a drink. The mother of one of the children (the store owner) looked at the shot on my camera screen, and asked for a copy. I will get back with a print.
