Nikon's new firmware upgrade

Pretty impressive, I agree. I can definitely think of a few things that could me improved — probably very easily — via firmware updates to my 1D Mark II's. Let us hope that C will be inspired in this direction by N's action.

I'd be floored!

It doesn't seem to be in the Canon mindset to do a firmware upgrade similar in scope to that of Nikon. There have been a lot of mostly negative speculation as to why Canon doesn't think that way.

Having bought more than a couple of bodies from them over the last couple of years I would be very appreciative if they offered a firmware upgrade that said, "Thank you loyal Canon users".

Obviously the ability to program the Print button on my 5D to mirror lockup would be great as I'll never use the built-in printing features. Speaking of printing software I would trade all of it on my 1D Mark II N for at least four complete camera configurations like the C mode on the 5D. It works great on the 5D.

And finally the rotate in the file but not on the display like the 30D has would be wonderful. Much of my shooting is portrait oriented JPGs. The ability to see a large image without turning camera or head would make life easier.

Come on Canon, I dare you. Tell me "Thank you" via firmware for the 1D Mark II N and the 5D.

Hi

Have you seen details of new Nikon firmware?

http://www.dpreview.com/news/0610/06100301nikonfirmware.asp

How come such large company as Canon is unable to give us what we've been asking for at least half a year, that is programmable print button and Nikon can in single firmware upgrade provide such great list of improvements?

Not to turn this into a Nikon-Canon debate, but I am not impressed by most of the functionalities claimed by the Nikon upgrade. Most are already in 5D, 1DIIN (from start, no upgrades): WFT-E1 transmitter, image auth, custom curves (aka Picture Styles), save/load settings (aka 'C' mode), MLU with battery and AC, max 60shots reported.

The other improvements I don't understand.

What seems different is GPS data.

Print Button - MLU: probably a good idea. But then people will ask for something else than MLU on that button, so it's configurable. I guess that's the difficulty - making it really configurable, as like DoF preview, AF engage, fire preflash, AF assist beam and so many others.

The 'C' mode can be used quite successfully for quick access to MLU (bypass menus, CFn).

I'd say leave the print button as it is, or paint it Pink so it screams more for upgrades :)

In 5D, I would like to see an option that fires the AF assist beam always, independent of lighting conditions (currently the beam is emitted only if some lighting conditions are met). That I need.

Auto ISO would be nice to try (manually set aperture and speed, let camera decide ISO).
