No more carburetors - reflex mirrors either

A number of years ago, when the fleet had been totally converted to fuel injection, we said "No more carburetors - praise God almighty, no more carburetors".

Today the mantra is, "No more reflex mirrors".

Many of you know that I am a big fan of the electronic viewfinder (EVF) model for digital cameras. In fact, one of the most important pictures of my life was taken with a very nice one, a Sony MVC-FD91.

This gorgeous Cherokee lady had just, about 24 hours earlier, agreed to become my wife. And she had, earlier the day of this shot, picked out (without my knowledge) her wedding dress, which she saw at a charity fashion show we attended as our first date after our engagement.

But I digress.

I've lately been very excited by the prospect, widely rumored, that Canon will soon introduce an electronic viewfinder interchangeable lens ("EVIL") camera.

The rumors vary as to their technical details. One has the new family called "EIS", with a fairly-serious member as the first offering, perhaps called the "EIS 60". This rumor describes a sensor size of 18 x 12 mm (sounds good to me). (That would have a crop factor of 0.5 with respect to the full-frame 35-mm frame size, or as many people say, a crop factor of 2.)

There would be a new family of lenses, but there would be an adapter to allow the use of EF-series lenses on the new bodies.

Of course, this rumor has already been "debunked". The premises for that are very profound, and include:

• "Oh, that would just be silly".
• "Canon would surely not introduce a new sensor size for just this."
• "Canon would surely not make it not take ED lenses" (Oh, I'm sorry, I mean EF lenses - it's hard to keep these stories straight over the decades.)

Of course, we just don't know. But I do know silly when I see it. And sometimes paint it red.

In any case, I'm excited. Here's looking in ya, EVF!

Best regards,

Doug

Edited 2011.02.22 1730 UT-6: Correct error in sensor size (was 18 x 22 mm).

Did you mean to write 18 x 12 mm since you mention the 0.5 crop factor?

Cheers,

Hi, Cem,

Did you mean to write 18 x 12 mm since you mention the 0.5 crop factor?
Well, indeed. I don't dare let anything get out without having Carla edit it.

Yes, 18 x 12 mm is what that rumor says.

I'll hot-patch it.

Thanks.

Best regards,

Doug

It would be nice if they bought into the 4/3 standard.. and built a nice 4/3 to EOS adapter with the ability to control the lens properly. I have an Olympus EP-2 micro 4/3 and a generic EOS adapter. I can use my manual lens, but not my nice real autofocus stuff. It's a very fine little camera, but it would be nice to use my Canon lens with it.

Hi, Duke,

Yes, I have thought that.

Of course, for one thing, they seem not reconciled to a basic aspect ratio of 4:3.

Best regards,

Doug
