Norman 200C

A couple of weeks ago, Will Thompson advertised a Norman 200C portable strobe in the Buy/Sell forum here. I bought it. It took a couple of weeks to get new batteries, a flash bracket, sync cord, etc. But it's all in working (shooting) order. At Will's request, I took some pictures of my new flash setup and some pictures with it. My only available subjects are my cats, so here are 3 of the 4. The fourth cat is a long-haired black cat that soaks up light like a black hole, so there are no pictures of her ;-)

The flash bracket is a Custom Brackets QRS-35 bracket on which the camera rotates and the bracket and flash remain stationary. I have a Camdapter quick-release plate and hand strap on the camera, so the quick release plate had to remain on the camera to allow me to use the strap. This causes the camera rotation axis to not be exactly on the lens, but it's only 1/4" (7mm) off.

I made a quick web site to link to, instead of hot-linking a bunch of pictures into this thread.

The setup pictures were taken with my point and shoot with its on-camera flash and auto everything. The exposure data for the others are below the thumbnails on the index page.

Thanks to Will for his conscientious attention to the deal and for ensuring that I was satisfied. I'm sure I will use the Norman for a lot of pictures in the days to come.

Thanks

Hi Charles,

How many watt seconds did you have it set to for the kitty shots. 50 I am thinking since you have no shutter shadows visible, then again I do not remember how long a duration the output is on the norman. If you have any shadow bars in the frame when you have it set to full output try 125th/sec as this is what canon suggests with studio strobes. The Norman may still classify as a speed-light and work OK at max sync speed.

Enjoy your new toy!

Will,

Yes, the pack was set to 50 ws for all of these. I'll check for shutter shadows tonight with the two higher power settings.

I use 1/250 w/ my Alien Bee studio strobes, and assumed it would be OK for the Norman as well.

Will,

I tested the strobe at 100 ws (1/2 power) and 200 ws (full power) and the 1/250 sync speed is fine. I see a hint of shutter shadow at 1/320 and a definite shadow at 1/400.
