You have some great shots here, Fahim. I particularly like #1 and #7, especially #7. That is some striking symmetry and the broken reflections of those pillars are what helps make the shot. It wouldn't be possible to come up with the same type of image during the day and that's why you were in the right place at the right time with that one...nice one.

Hi, Cem,

This one we call in Turkish Usturlab. I suspect it is of Arabic origin. Is Usturlâb tأُصْطُرْلاَبٌ the original word for it?
The word in English and many other languages for this device is astrolabe. This device is different from the mariner's astrolabe (which we can think of, not too accurately, as a "mobile" version).

There is disagreement as to the origin of the word. A common and credible etymology is that the term comes from the Greek ἀστρολάβος (astrolabos), "star-taker".

In medieval times it was called in parts of the Islamic empire (transliterated of course) asturlab, certainly a cognate with the Turkish.

One source suggests that the term comes from the Persian (again, transliterated) sitara yab, meaning "taker of the stars").

Best regards,

Doug

Then came the fountains and the clocks and the stars...

Sometime ago, I had asked myself the question..Is it art or is it mathematics? That was in the context of a mosque in Istanbul. I posted an image.

I asked myself the same question when I saw this...
