Recomendations for using a 580ex and 430ex manual or e-ttl

I recently purchased a 430ex as a slave for my 580ex. I use them with my Canon 1D Mark II. I am mainly concerned with shooting the group formal shots after the ceremony. The first time I tried I was not able to trigger the 430. I was using an omni bounce on each (not too bright, no pun intended). The second time was better but the groups were much smaller and I was able to set up closer. If I should use the E-TTL auto mode any recommendations on 3-1 or 1-3. If manual how do I set the lights with my light meter (Sekonic l558r) and still keep close to ambient light. I have not found any books or web sites or sales people Hahn or Rowe that have helped.

Secondly. I am in the market for a battery pack for my 580ex. From the research I have done so Far, I am looking at the Sunpak TR2000 with a second battery.
