We were probably about 50 miles from anyone or anywhere in the Alaskan back country. My wife and I were with our bear guide (Brad) in Kukak bay. No guns, no spray, no trees to climb - just one bear flare (like a road flare). We usually hike to an area Brad thinks the bears will frequent and wait for some action (see them in the distance and hope they will feed to us). After a half hour, a small sow grizzly and a boar came within about 30 yards. Eventually the boar bred the female (takes about 45 minutes). Just after they completed, another boar came in and was really upset that he missed out on all the action. As he walked by us (less than 20 feet) he did the cowboy walk (very common with grizzlies when they are trying to show dominance). The cowboy walk is interesting, they swing their hind legs when they walk (like John Wayne used to do). As he walked by he poped his jaw and snarled and urinated all over himself. It was a little tense, but he kept going. There really isn't anything you can do but sit there, they approach us and if we ran - they would stop us. You have to e calm and just them pass..
