Sigma 50mm Macro for EOS

I use a 30D and an XT backup for weddings etc.

When clients start to roll through my doors, I will be looking to upgrade some gear.

Currently my macro kit consists of my existing lenses plus Kenko macro tube which I find are a bitch to use.

I have ideas of taking close-ups of wedding rings on the ring cushion. Thus I am thinking toward a Sigma 50mm. My question is - how reliable would the Sigma 50mm be in action. I found that my Tamron 28-75 and 17-35 were very hit and miss on my XT. They're better on my 30D though I seem to use my Canon lenses more. Would I be better saving my pennies and buying a Canon 50mm macro?

I don't think this would be a problem for the application you mention, but note that the EF 50 mm macro will not do a magnification of 1:1 (maximum is 2:1). (There is of of course a special focal length converter intended only for use with it that gives a maximum magnification of 1:1).

Since you're operating with the 22.5x15 mm format size, you might want to look into the Canon EF-S 60 mm macro. It will do 1:1 by itself, and is a great general-purpose lens.

I was kinda sorta thinking of killing 2 birds with one stone (might be a daft idea though as 2-in-one solutions rarely work well at either end) by sticking to EF lenses on the basis that I do eventually want to go all 5D or 1DsMk3 when I amass sufficient income from my photography business.
