Some Guy in South Dakota Has Joined

Having no idea where he actually is or why he does this, Some Guy in South Dakota has joined the Open Photography Forums.

Dawnne Gee, a recent (2004) transplant from Southern California (Ventura County) joined the forums several nights ago after much lurking on several professional forums. He is a full-time freelancer specializing in weddings, environmental portraiture, and sports, exclusively using Nikon digital equipment. He's been shooting for around sixteen years, but having recently turned forty, really doesn't care to keep counting anymore. Dawnne participates here as well as "The Unmentionable Forum", the DAM forum, Adobe user forums, and on several political blogs (under an assumed nome-du-keyboard).

To answer the questions that are frequently asked, Dawnne is neither female nor Oriental. He simply had hippy parents with a penchant for extra "n's", and Gee is a truncated Scottish thing. Being American, Dawnne is still unsure as to whether or not truncated Scottsmen are allowed to wear kilts. Luckily, it's normally too cold and windy for that kind of stuff in South Dakota, anyway....

Dawnne is an avid software tester, and infrequent writer for the The Graphics Report. For you gamers in the crowd, Dawnne is one of the lead beta-testers for Turner Broadcasting's GameTap, and also moderates their beta forums. You can visit his deplorably-maintained website at your own risk. Most of the content there is from a couple of years ago, and Dawnne is actively seeking someone to help bring it up to date. With a couple of children, two cats, and his head in two different businesses, Dawnne recently realized that some of the small-but-important things in life have begun to slip. That's also his motivation for participating on this forum: He woke up the other day and realized that he'd been remiss in keeping current with trends, techniques and several software updates.

"Go figure," I told him, then realized I was talking to myself and really shouldn't be doing that.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to getting to know you all. Thanks for your time.

Hy Dawnne,

Great to have to here! You seem to do everything in twos: cats, enterprises, kids, n's and there's probably more!

You're so welcome here! The graphic report site is interesting. I also like your website! Who would know it's not up to date?

Where are you up to in your Nikon DSLR upgrades. There was a time when a camera would last 15-30 years! Anything to do with digital, starting with the Microsoft empire, has to be fed every year!

Nikon always was at the forefront of sports photography until Canon lenses gave them a big whack in their popularity. Now, however, Nikon is resurging and that is more important to Canon users than anything else. Canon paces what they put out according to maximising their sales of course and an eye on who is out their.

Thus for example, Canon has felt no need to put out an improved 1DII because they don't feel that much threatened. However, with the latest excellent Nikon cameras, and better expected, we might see Canon take out what they already have beta tested.

I recently used a D2X for macro work and it was so wonderfully competent and the only thing holding one back is oneself!

We are so keen on building a strong presence in Nikon. I think we now have a pretty good base of experienced users. So you are especially welcome.

BTW, you can sell unused equipment here too!

Kind wishes,

Asher

Heh, yeah, I guess I am doing everything in twos. Maybe it's a bipolar thing. No, it isn't. Well, maybe. Be quiet, I want to talk now. Geez, so bossy....

D2X, D70, D100 here with a D200 on the way -- I've managed to keep up-to-date on the firmware updates, but an update to my firewall was keeping some Adobe, Bibble, iView and Corel updates from coming down. In the process of a partner not being able to push some stuff to my server here, I realized the firewall trouble, which woke me up once again to the wonderful world of paying attention to detail.

Yah, I know....everyone (even the big-name, popular guys) seem to think Canon glass became better at some point. As my local colleagues and I have occasionally traded cameras, I haven't necessarily found that to be true. But it has ever been a matter of opinion, and mine would probably change if I had the funds to stock up on the lenses I need for both mount-types.

Who doesn't use their equipment? Both Canon and Nikon cost so much, I don't think I would ever find myself buying something just to resell. An interesting thought, though....

Dawne,

One may not buy new lenses just to sell. Used lenses however, are economical to buy for a long job or untill something else can be afforded. All the great Nikon and Canon lenses can be used as currency and cashed in for their value even years later.

New DSLR bodies, it seems, lose at 50% every 3 years. These losses don't stabilize as much as with lenses.

So buying a lens is no risk!

Asher: my response was from this, where you said "unused" equipment. I went and looked on the sales thread and immediately saw people were selling used stuff, so I figured that out, but that was after I had posted my response.

Anyway, thank you for the warm welcome! I hope to be more active soon.
