Thailand crab eating monkey

Took this a few days ago while on Holiday in Thailand. Managed to slowly place the lens 2 inches away from his nose.

Edited on my Ipad 3 with snapseed and transfered to photoshop on my return for watermarking resizing.

Another one fired a few days after the first one was taken. This time at a somewhat more prudent distance

Very cool shots! Looks like he even smiled for you on the first one.

It's hard to be sure from the angle, but it appears there is a problem with the right eye on the second shot - I would guess previous trauma.

Thank you Don!.

Yes the second Monkey had severe eye trauma I guess from some fight over food with one of his brothers.

The first one is not smiling, that was my cue to get outta there in a hurry, I don't think he was happy at having that lens so close to his face....

Ao-Nang is a truly beautiful place (my second visit there)... I was very fortunate be in Krabi while the Nine emperor god festival was in full fight and got some incredible images that I will be sharing as soon as I have some time to edit them.

Ivan,

I love your photography and this is enjoyable. Are you now using your iPad as your travel companion instead of a digicam or DSLR? The quality of the image is superb. Really we have reached a stage where for most purposes, cameras are no longer needed!

Still, you take huge risks! These beautiful wild creatures have their own balanced ecosystem of germs. They carry ummeasurable risks all sorts of viruses that can be spread to man, some potentially might even cause HIV-AIDS like illness or even leukemia or cancer later in life. I'd hate to hear you got bitten. A lot of agents are not known well enough to be even tested for! Every so often, a new virus is discovered. Problem is that some agents are hidden in the cellular genomes as archaic remnants and when, for example, a monkey eats a fruit dropped by a bat, it can obtain a new piece of genome that, combined with what's already there, gives rise to a reconstituted active agent! We do not know enough to say a bite with this monkey is safe! At best you'd get a shot for rabies but slow acting viruses are a risk to all of us.

Hi Asher.
Thank you for the kind words, I respect your opinion greatly and so, I am very pleased you like my photos.

The images were taken with my Canon 1Dx and then edited with my iPad which has become my chosen travelling companion for quick picture review and editing.

The Crab eating Macaques of Ao-Nang expend their lives in the mountains surrounding the beautiful Ao_Nang beach and so, they are accustomed to Humans. They can be very approachable with little consequences. Just make sure not to flash shiny objects or food at them. These items are priced and they will aggressively try to snatch them from your hands . Other than that, there is little concern for a nasty bite. Unless, of course, you go about provoking or teasing them in which case, you are asking for it.

As mentioned before, I was fortunate to be in Krabi during the famous Nine Emperor Gods festival which, is celebrated in all major Chinese communities throughout the world. The Thai Chinese community however, differs from the rest of the world in that some participants engage in extreme self mutilation to express their faith. This is confined to Thailand and more specifically to Krabi and Phuket regions and is not seen anywhere else in the world.

I took some very graphic images which together with my thoughts on the subject, I will share in a few days in the downtown section of the forum (I do not think they are appropriate to share in the photojournalist/street photography section)

Once again thank you for the kind words Asher.
