The age of steam

I was looking back through the archives the other night and came across a little set of pictures from April 2005 - soon after I first had a digital camera. These were taken with a Panasonic Lumix FZ20 (still working) on a day out to celebrate our older daughter's third birthday and when the younger was about 3 weeks old. I thought I would share the trains' picture story.

Rachel makes a keen point, Mike. These four images together have stronger identity than any one of them singly. I would imagine these presented large on the walls of a railroad museum.

Mike,

I love the set of images and agree they are worthy of a place on the wall of a railway museum. I'd add to that a book on steam engines too. These photographs are detailed in each image, providing visual information that would allow descriptive text. I hope we can see more like this. The steam engine and it's greatest son, the train, have changed human society perhaps more than anything else. It has allowed new lands to be populated, spouting towns like great rivers do, and then supporting trade and commerce.

The trains bell, the cry "All aboard" and the slow shuffling hissing beginning to the monster moving away along the track can be heard when looking at your pictures. Thanks!

Advice to grandparents: take a hint; kids love trains. So a visit to the station, train yard and ride on a train are always fun. If there's a guy, like the one Mike shows, yelling, "All aboard!" you're made!

Lives on. Wonderful set Mike. I particularly like this one. Where is Hercule P. ? The whistle, the curved
track. The goodbyes. Evokes memories of an era long gone but never forgotten.

Now do you have some vinyl records?

Wonderful Mike.

The first shot is a nice image, Mike. I like the human element in that one. 'Burning' in the light toned bottom right area and 'dodging' the guys face a little certainly improves the image, too.

Hi Mike,

I love steam trains, and always make a point of visiting Dalegarth station whenever I'm in Eskdale to get some shots of the "L'al Ratty" arriving. Last week was no exception :)

Great photos, but for me the second one is a winner.

Regards,

Stuart

Everyone, thanks for your comments.

I do think of these as a set, rather than as individual pictures, but it's nice that you can pick out ones that you prefer. Perhaps I'll make some prints up and take them over to the station some time - my wife now works in the village!

Paul, I'll spend a bit of time with the first image and try burning the front of the engine in a dn dodging the drivers face. Cheers.

Asher, you asked if there were more and there are a few. I'll pull the other together in the next few days and make a set of prints.

Cheers

Mike
