The endless problems continue (1D MkIIN)

I would sincerely like the guy, who has lost patience with Canon because of dirty sensors, come stand in my shoes. I have just about had it.

After the long saga, described on this extended thread, Canon replaced my 1D Mk II N with a new one. I opened it last night, charged the battery, and just went to do some simple test shooting this morning. Low and behold, I get severe banding at higher ISO, here are two examples (scaled down a bit): (these were shot just after sunrise, purely to test camera operation).

This is with 28-300L, IS on, in AI Servo. This, of course, worked perfectly on my previous 1D Mk II N, and on the 5D they loaned me in the meantime. I didn't even bother to test scenarios (i.e. with IS/Servo off) as the camera is going straight back. But I am truly concerned about Canon's quality control - do they not test their cameras, not even their 1-series, before shipping? I've never had this kind of trouble with a 350D or a 5D. My 1D experience is supposed to be far better, right? If the *third* camera is also a dud, I consider insisting on a refund, and then just waiting it out until the Mk3 becomes available (and shooting film until then).

Hey David,

no denying you have a major issue with that. My advice..........make noise. Approach the HEAD of the Canon service dept verbally & in writing. DEFINITELY wait fot the MKIII. It is so close it is worth waiting for. The noiseiest wheel gets the most oil so make sure you are heard.
Ultimately I am confident you will get a good result.

Good luck & best wishes.

Paul

So sorry to hear that David! I know how it feels, I was 6 month without my camera, to make a long story short, I send it to repair under warranty after I had it only for 10 weeks, got it back after 3 month, "repaired" to the state of final death and then had to wait nearly another 3 month until I got a new one, only after making a Heck of a noise.

Paul's advise is a good one!

Wow Georg, I hope they gave you a loan camera (6 months is incredibly long). I am making a lot of noise about this, believe me. I have built up quite a good relationship with the technical centre here, so I am confident that I will, in the end, achieve a good result. I'm still not happy about this, but understanding.

I will likely request a refund if a last attempt at replacement fails to deliver a good camera.

No they didn't, and to finalize the story, it took me to go to the head of consumer service in europe, who then walked the Halls to get me replacement, sending me a letter of appologies and offering me special % conditions on my next purchase. I have that in writing!

2 month ago I asked for those special conditions to be honored and wanted a quote for the Zuiko 7-14mm F4 Lense, the only information I got was that the chap is not working there anymore and nobody gives a flying bull about his special conditions offer he made.

If someone in my company many years ago would have made such a statement, it would have been a matter of honor to stick to that.

But ethics in companies these days is ruled by profit, and nothing else. I am still angry about this and plan to post a longer descrpition in a german forum that I know is followed by olympus. I won't let that go this easy.....

I feel your pain.. I am not sure i would hold off for the MarkIII, shipping was delayed because they already found an issue with the camera and all the firmwares had to be changed, atleast from what i hear. You can bet your bottom dollar on one thing, you can bet your sensor arrives filthy!

Camera replaced (again) and all now resolved

I've received my new replacement MkIIN, and did extensive torture testing of it at the service centre (with the technician), and all seems well. Very very well, in fact. Now I can finally go back to shooting pictures... In the meantime I've been using my tiny Minox 35EL (quite fun).

Finally, I seem to have a camera with no banding, very good noise performance, and no problematic hot pixels. Once all the problems disappears, one can again marvel at what a technological tour de force a 1D Mk II N truly is. I think with all the discussions around the MkIII, many people forget, or even feel jealous, about what they have. Just have a look at what a Nikon D2Xs looks like at ISO3200, and then you'll realise what an amazing accomplishment this camera is, and that's only from an image quality perspective - not even touching on all the other amazing aspects.

I for one expect to squeeze every last pixel out of this camera before ever thinking of upgrading. I would only have considered waiting for the Mk III if there were yet again problems with this replacement - upon which I would have demanded a refund. Thanks for all the interest everybody.
