Toledo was a major cultural center like we consider Oxford or Cambridge Univerdity towns today!

it was a major center, a “Pearl” for Jewish, Muslim and Christian learning and literature in the Middle Ages.

Judah Halevi, perhaps the greatest Hewish poet of all time, flourished there.
