It is intersecting to note that in the newly-announced Canon EOS C300 digital cinema camera, one mode takes each Bayer quad (a group of sensels with "R", "G", "G", and "B" spectral sensitivities) and treats it as a single "fat" "true tricolor" pixel detector, delivering a 1920 x 1080 px image. No demosaicing is involved.
That would suggest sensel dimensions for the sensor of about 3840 x 2160, a total of 8,294,400 sensels. The sensor is described by Canon as "incorporat[ing] approximately 8.29 million effective pixels" (meaning, of course, sensels). Works for me.
There are many implications of this in terms of antialiasing and the like, but I'm not yet prepared to ruminate on them. Perhaps after my Saturday breakfast (which we are having today, Friday, owing to schedule complications).
Best regards.
