When ears are pierced, the hole needs to be filled with something or it will close. Preferably, silver is used as it minimizes the risk of infection.
Therefore, the left girl presumably expects to be gifted earrings pretty soon, within hours or at most days. Is that correct?

No you really can't see in the photo but she has strings in the holes to keep them open.
