My World: What camera, what lens, how many?

fahim mohammed

Asher, in the other thread, asked what I carry as a cam and lens combo for travel. He asked all of us, really.

I replied one cam and a 50mm is all I need.

So in my recent trip of Seoul, 90% of my images made with Leica were with the 50mm.

So, a sampling of Leica and the 50mm in Seoul.

Why do I need more, for the type of photography I do. Which is almost anything except
Wildlife on safari.

Of course, I am not a sports photographer..yet.

Somethings, such as aperture and dof, are now second nature to me with my 50mm. I know what to set
For what I want...by having done it again and again and again. I am not smart, but practice has made it
Easy for me. No magic in it. Just do it.

Know the equipment you use. Know it so that it is out of the way. Reading about your equipment is start. But using it again and again, under various conditions will make it an extension of your vision.

Doing and learning. What went right, what went wrong. Critique your efforts mercilessly..you need to only satisfy yourself ( as a hobbyist ).

Point and shoot...practice again and again and again. Becomes second nature. Now it is up to your vision and vision alone.

Learn by doing. No substitute for this. None.

What cam and lens do I carry?

The question I ask myself is what lens do I need? The answer for me is the 50mm.

p444722310-6.jpg

But why just one lens? Because I know it inside out. By having used it
Again and again and again.

What camera and lens combination? Whichever suits you best. Whichever you know inside out.
Whichever gives you, YOU, the results you seek.

There is no magic camera, no magic lens,no magic book. The images you make, you make with your head and the heart.

Me? I just need 50mm and my cam. Because the combo is out of my way...

Whether in the streets of Seoul or any place else.

Actually, Fahim, I agree. A 50mm lnes is perfect for portrait and with the right postion for architecture and landscape too...and one can stitch. With my 50mm Super mult ccoated Takamur, that's all I used for a decade!

Now, a 21mm is a miracle collector of spans of landscape, buildings and celebrations in packed rooms. So one can expand and not detract from one's main one lens. My man one lens is now the 55mm 1.8 Zeiss for all my serious work.

But for you, the 50mm focal length is so fitting as mostly you find bits of buildings and clumps of humanity, for which your lens is idea.

Asher, this is a personnel choice/fit. Others have equally valid choices.

Generally one lives life ' a bit at a time '. I find ' clumps ' of life suits me fine. I do not want to experience life as one big canvas taken in one all inclusive go. However dramatic that might be.

As with life, so with my choice in photography. A ' bit ' at a time. :)
A MI here, a malfunction/dysfunction there. All at once would be too much, for me.

Regards.

Hello Fahim

I see we share the same philosophy and some of the same gear except I shoot in B/W with my Leica Monochrom and Summilux ASPH 1.4/50 but no two people share the same perspective regardless if they have the same gear or not. I will bet you a wet fish that if you and I were to make a picture of the same thing we would both come up with different pictures.

James, thank you for stopping by.
You do raise a valid point that no two people would come up with a similar image when shooting the same thing. That is what makes it so personal and interesting.

Enjoy your MM. An excellent tool which I know shall allow you to make super images.

Kindest regards.

Wicked images as usual, Fahim.
Not being the romantic you are, and having a feeble heart you do, I'm more inclined to think you shoot with a sharp mind and eye. A great combination, nevertheless.
That is the same look I get from Christine when I surprise her with the camera. Please tell me what it means, Oh Noble One.

Hello exalted one!

I was quietly walking along a street in Seoul, minding my own business, when I hear click, click, click
Short and furious bursts of a camera on continuous mode. I turned. Nothing.

Looked down, and sure enough, two guys..not one but two mind you..with Nikon bricks slung over their shoulders, hunched on their knees with lenses as long as a..we'll long lenses on either side of me clicking away...click, click, click..rapid fire.

Hi, I said. Something interesting down there, I asked. Looking down just in case my flies were open or something.

Where are you from? Grunted one Yakuzi. I told him.
Where you bozos from, I asked. They did not get the ' bozos ' bit.

Releases the pressure on their triggers. And walked away. WTF.
Not even a thank you!

I catched up with one of them and said, ' you should say thank you '.

He turned...a bit startled and angry I think.

I pressed my trigger button once. ' one good shot is all real men need ', and walked away.

What does this all mean Tom?

Don't *uck around with someone with a Leica and a 50mm.

Take care.

....and riding a white Arabian stallion, no less.
My finances or taste don't extend to such luxuries but my body does give way to "Nikon bricks" so I now arm myself with a Fuji X-T1. A delightful bundle of black and dials but only worthy of a small pony or a draft horse.
Such rudeness would never be tolerated where I live. As you well know.

Somehow I feel comforted to be back among my friends and tolerators. I feel somewhat like an angry dog at a chattery. Fun but uncomfortably nervous.

Fond regards, Fahim

Tom, stallions ( white or otherwise ) are for those that either/and love horses, can afford them and/or want to prove something.

I meet none of the above criteria.

I, too have used Nikons for more than 30 years, and also have Fujis. Still have them. What does that mean?
Only that totally dissimilar people can have similar camera equipment. Nothing more, nothing less.

It does not change the person, nor his/her outlook on life or what he/she is.

When I was young, not too long ago mind, most cams came with a 50mm lens.
There are many reasons for that.

Mundane, is surely not one of them. And one does not need white stallions to look at the world around
one.
And one does not need vast amounts of technical know how , or a ton of equipment.

Just let your images bloom with what you have. In my case it is the lowly 50mm.

We are not so far removed, Fahim. We both share a love for our family, friends, travel and photography. We both have dealt with death at our doorstep. We are both always right, and the other wrong. We continue to communicate in spite of our differences but because of our similarities. Our cultures are different but our humanity places us in the same room. Our genes differ by such a small amount that we could be mistaken for relatives, distant as it may be but not distant enough to identify. I am as similar to you as you are to me and the rest of the people on the planet.
I need to remind myself of that quite often.

It is said the the coc ( circle of confusion, for simple folks like me ) is .03mm for my cam. Of course, it is approximate...as always such things are. That is why I am so so confused.

Knowing that precious bit on information sure came in handy...

p790899384-6.jpg

If I did not know have that information, I guess I could not have made this image.
