Jaime,

So his ear got ripped, he lost one antler and walked away alive with strips of the other fellow's skin! what about his chin and mouth? Is that torn too? Overall, I wonder whether he was the last guy standing?

Asher

I actually believe this guy was injured in a fence. I had heard stories about it. He lost an antler and broke his jaw. But this was months ago and he seems to be doing ok...

The strips of skin are his velvet stripping from his antlers. Every year, deer grow antlers - then about this time of year they rub the velvet from their antlers as they harden. Then they actually shed the antlers in late december and regrow them from scratch again the next spring!

Wow, he looks so young yet so damaged. Certainly shows the harsh side of nature. At first I thought that was the skin of his opponent and was surprised to learn that it was the velvet from his own antler. Wonderful photo as are all your photos. :)
