Hi, Asher,
Well, in 1980 California instituted a new scheme for the assignment of license plate number passenger cars (and I suspect for certain other vehicle classes). The new format numbers were initially of the form:
1ABC123
As each series was exhausted, the initial digit was advanced. Thus we can easily tell in what year a certain number was assigned. The initial digit "8" was supposedly first assigned in 2017; "9" was supposedly first assigned in 2024.
After this plan is exhausted (expected for 2026), the next numbers assigned will be of the format: 123ABC1.
But it seems just the other day when I first saw a plate of the (modern) "1ABC123" format.
Best regards,
Doug
