A Kodak moment

Life in New York...from my wanderings

The angle is perfect. The discrepancy between the men's sizes is brilliant. The moment chosen is essential!

PS: Are you in the course of photographing the photographers at the moment?

Hi John,

You are becoming a real hunter for these defining moments. You choose your hunting grounds carefully and wait patiently for the prey to fall into the trap you've set up. This is mastery at work :).

Re. the picture itself: excellent. The plastic bag in the left hand completes the picture. Now only if he were holding a Kodak camera himself! Just kidding ;-)

Cheers,

John,

Why don't you see how many pictures you have now in this ongoing NY street series. Maybe you could show a set of thumbnails in RISKIT with links to the original thread so we can see how the series is building.

Am impressed!

Please don't take this the wrong way, but that'd be just about 90% of what I've posted since joining in '08.
You just realized I shoot the streets of NYC?
I guess I'm improving...
There's hope for me yet.

No John, not quite a brain-senior moment. Rather you might select your best!

NYC is fortunate indeed to have you among the photographers that tell its fabulous stories.

Best regards,

Hi everyone,
Sorry not to have replied sooner to all the very flattering and gracious remarks, it's been crazy busy at work and now we're hunkering down for another snow storm.

I picked Cem's post to quote because it made me laugh at myself. Truth is I'm not very stealthy when roaming the streets and I'd probably fare much better should I decide to appear a bit more friendly and engaging.
Although in retrospect, a gruff appearance and demeanor has probably saved my skin more than once (esp. late at night deep in the subways).

Anyway...it brought to mind a self-shot I clicked one day, passing my reflection in a storefront window.
Stealthy I am not!

Geez, would you pose for this guy???

Hi John,

Love the self portrait! What's up with the visible ID hanging around your neck?

PS: didn't they teach you to never cross the streams*, err the straps? ;-)

Cheers,

*) obscure reference to the Ghostbuster movie.

Shades of Martin Parr methinks:)
Thinking of the flash there - not sure he's quite as scary!
Mike

Parr's a madman, or as Cartier-Bresson commented (insultingly)..."from another planet".
I only dream to have my name on the Magnum list!

Cheers,

I used to shoot freelance for a couple of local papers - I still retain the press credentials.
As for the crossed straps - in the crush of crowded subways, parades, etc. you'd never keep a camera on your shoulder otherwise. Besides, it makes them harder to steal.

I can imagine that it can come in as quite handy, especially with the current phobia of the law enforcement officers against photographers carrying serious looking cameras who might be terrorists ;-).

The press (of which I certainly do not consider myself a part of) and the NYPD have not always enjoyed the best of relationships.
So, I'll only use the credentials for events such as parades and other happy public outings where I can gain a spot "on the other side of the barrier", so to speak.
Normally the card is home, tucked safely way in a desk drawer.
That said, one can always get a shot or two worth keeping while hanging around the "happy, public outings":

This was taken standing in the center of Broadway, cooling my heels waiting for the Columbus Day parade to start.
It obviously delayed the parade.
