That depends on how you choose to define “use”!
After all, likely as not, the myriads of patches of skin texture were learned from sampling real faces lit with real incident light.

Indeed, the paper explains that the algorithm was trained on a new dataset created for the occasion:
We have collected a new dataset of human faces, Flickr- Faces-HQ (FFHQ), consisting of 70,000 high-quality im- ages at 10242 resolution (Figure 7). The dataset includes vastly more variation than CelebA-HQ [29] in terms of age, ethnicity and image background, and also has much bet- ter coverage of accessories such as eyeglasses, sunglasses, hats, etc. The images were crawled from Flickr (thus in- heriting all the biases of that website) and automatically aligned and cropped. Only images under permissive li- censes were collected. Various automatic filters were used to prune the set, and finally Mechanical Turk allowed us to remove the occasional statues, paintings, or photos of photos. We have made the dataset publicly available at https://github.com/NVlabs/ffhq-dataset

Been a bit.. but picking up the camera again
although older image.. figured I'd add a few natural light images (actually pretty much the only type of light I use for portraits
these are from window light (a BNB we stayed in during a trip to Montreal.. and this sitting room was just windows (and gaudy furniture )
