Humanitarian Photography

An area of photography that doesn't appear much on forums (I have a cursory glance at others perhaps).

Never been into landscapes, portraits, heavens to Betsy - a definate no no for weddings! That said (or typed in this case) humanitarian photography does interest me. Am at the moment contacting local organisations that do good works (local . . . . er . . . local to France perhaps, the rest of world is not so local). Start small and see how things go from there.

Have for years had an interest in eastern Europe, Romania beckons, am attracted by the stories that might be there. Eastern Germany, still have a soft spot for Germany in general but the east . . . I have lots of questions, things to see.

Life has been a bit tame since I took (early) retirement and need to get a buzz back into my life. I miss the adrenalin, is that a good thing or bad?

Though I have the sentiment sometimes that this is what others do, why does it appeal? I think to tell a story through the images, to show things that aren't usually seen , to highlight a point.

Though while I'm here, if anyone knows of any humanitarian organisations (small or large, perhaps small are better) that operate in Europe (regardless of where their head office is) let me know (though think the major ones I know about and often they already have loads of photographers).

I do not understand what you mean by ' humanitarian ' photography.

Could you explain it a little. Others might be able to help.

Regards.

A humanitarian photographer is someone who 'focuses on social-awareness campaigns with non-profit organisations' is one definition I found or 'Travel and social documentary photo, specialising in global social issues photojournalism' or 'who documents the stories of communities across the globe for NGOs'.

Though one doesn't need to travel the world, there are social problems often on ones own doorstep that are of interest. To start it would be logical to do stuff for local organisations \ charities to start to get known for this type of work.

Type Humanitarian photographer into a search engine and see what there is. Some interesting reading.

I am sorry I am unable to help on your local level. You could narrow down your area of interest and

look for a local based org. serving that interest group.

Thank you for the elucidation and good luck.

I didn't think there would be anyone that wold know what is local to me. I'll try and make myself more clear.

Was thing that perhaps (an example, nothing more) some one might know of an organisation based in Canada (good a place as any) but works in Bulgaria.

Apart from that have contacted already a few organisations, now await replies (one lives in hope LOL!)
