This bird has a remarkable coat. It looks like the pigment is metameric. Are the other colors separate pigments or much of them appear differently with the angle of light?

Yes the light has a big effect otherwise the bird would appear all black. Its a Common Grackle.

Creatures have amazingly well developed mastery of microscopic physical and chemical form in down to nano-structures to create color, lightweight support, cooling systems and other engineering marvels.
