Unnatural Erosion

Peter Dexter

Well-known member
The Andes mountains being a younger geological formation than for example the Ozark mountains of the US Midwest are typically very steep not having experienced the natural erosion of the latter. Farmers in Colombia all too often clear these slopes.

The people in this home have cleared the forest on a steep slope in the Colombian Andes in order to graze cows. On the left side of the image you can see a huge landslide has occurred as a result. Lush forest in the Andes if left undisturbed will cling to extremely steep slopes that nearly qualify as cliffs but when there is clearing activity by man it comes crashing down.

Why would they clear a slope?

Don't they have land advisors, even perhaps elders of a village who could earn them, or are these adventures moving far from home and staking out a “claim” to free land?
