Saddle Makers

A month or so ago while walking along a street beside the Station Market - - - I was snooping in windows as I walked, and noticed an old man scraping hides inside a dark dungeon of a room. I did not stop that day - but kept the location in mind to return to.

Well - 2 days ago when I was in that area of town, I walked the same path and came upon the building - - - however this time a young man was inside stitching together saddle padding. The tanning and the old man were not around. I wasn't going to pass by the location again without something photographically.

I bent into the window and asked in Spanish, if I could take photos of him working. He agreed and I grabbed a few leaning in the window and the open door. There was no space for me to go inside. I asked when the man would be tanning and he told me what days he does that. So I will return hopefully.

At one point the fellow popped his head out the window to talk to me and when I saw this magnificent opportunity for a well framed portrait, I simply asked that he raise his arm up onto the sill and I GOT MY SHOT. Couldn't have been better, if I had fully planned it. On leaving, I took an overview shot of the building made of raw wood boards full of character.

A Recent Portrait - 3 versions

2 of my favourite looks for my images taken in Central America, are easily handled in Lightroom. In fact I am not using Photoshop at all - even when it comes to dodging, burning, or spotting. Thought I'd display both the grungy colour and toned black and white, alongside the original. One is not better or preferable to the other - - - it is just how I feel that day when I am processing or many times is to provide variety into the mix of related images that I have shot.

This is the toned black and white as I have displayed the image on my Facebook and Google + pages. The look is achieved through "Split Toning" the Highlights to a value of Hue = 52, Saturation = 23. It's not a formula, just settings that I played with and liked

Today I also decided to process for my grunge look that I absolutely love with these street images. It is a result of using a high Clarity setting as well as dialing back Vibrance and sometimes Saturation - - - the settings that along with Clarity, are available in the "Presence" set of tools.

Here is the original - straight out of camera.

And just for the fun of it - - - here is one that I threw into my favourite online image effects processor (http://robertwatcher.com/web/tools/pixlr_express.php) for an effortless, edgy look.

This house with a 5 foot high door and low walls, caught my eye today - then the lady came out. I asked if could take her photo. She agreed, but asked me to bring her back a print. No problem. I then went in for a closeup of her.

I presumed that the people living there may be really short - - - but found out that the floor inside the house, drops down into the ground a couple of feet or more.

ALL DONE FOR ANOTHER TRIP OF A LIFETIME

Anne and I are down to our last days of living in Nicaragua and doing so with the intent of getting to know the locals and living like them as much as possible. It has been an incredible five months and I have many many wonderful images of people, places and things - from the experience.

While I will still be shooting and gathering information over the next days, for our return this coming October 2013 for a seven month stay - - - we will be quite busy wrapping things up, and so this will be the last post for this thread. Thanks everyone who followed, hope you were inspired and enjoyed the ride.

Hi Rob,

I've enjoyed watching your images from the moment you started this trip. It seems like yesterday, how time flies... It's turned out to be a nice addition to your portfolio, with a lot of keepers.

Have a safe journey home.

Cheers,
Bart

I'm not sure if I had mentioned previously . . .

. . . but Anne and I have a huge "crush" on our life in Central America - - - and so have made the decision to live there for much of the year - coming back home to Canada for only around 3 months in the summer, to spend time with family and friends.

And so we are heading back to Nicaragua in about a month and a half.

The 5 months that we were there during the trip this post is about, didn't touch the endless possibilities of stories and images that we will be putting together. We made many contacts where our ideas will be fulfilled on our return.

--

And so I have been very busy the last month and a half designing and building a brand new website with a brand new domain name http://travelvirgins.net (I tried purchasing the .com version from the domain name owner and couldn't get my hands on it unfortunately).

What I have done with this new fresh build, is put all journal posts and photos from all years since we began in 2008, into one contiguous database. In this way everything we have posted is within easy access.

We will be providing travel information such as hotels, hostels, restaurants, etc - with out personal experience with such location - for any wishing to travel to these destinations or others that we travel to in the future.

Unfortunately the change in domain name from asifweknow.com to travelvirgins.net, will mean that some of the links in the posts I have made on the forum - will not work properly. I have however built a directory where all posts should be easy to get to at the new site.

Hopefully those who have followed will keep on doing so. I will continue making my "photography related" posts here on the forum. Although, I am only able to include a few photos with each post - whereas all of them are available for viewing in the PHOTOS section of the new site.

I will be 100% Micro Four Third shooting this year and will be attempting more mixed media with video, sounds and stills. It will be an interesting challenge refining these techniques. My current gear are couple of Olympus Pen cameras. I am very comfortable with both, for their light weight and inconspicuousness.
